Last report talking to members on a U.S. fishing forum Penn SS have got
2 years supply of parts in making there reels.so any thing marked china
still has all USA parts
i have had an 850 now for about 15 years and a 650 for almost the same and i have had absolutely no trouble with them... same as when i bought them..... come to think of it i dont think i have pulled them apart for a good clean and oil for about 6-7 years now. just hose em out after each use with fesh water back the drag off and hang em up
Its funny, when i looked at buying a few new reels a while back, i was off the Penns, but actually ended up buying a new 8500ssm and a 6500ssm. Ive had both apart for the usual "new reel" service and whilst they arent brass main gears anymore the build quality is high, components are beefy and i dont forsee there being any issues with them. In fact i searched the web high and low before purchasing and found no bad reviews, or experiences with them. And so far for me, they have been excellent. I also have an old original 8500ss and it is also still going strong.
The new China SSM had a few issues when they were first launched and only now has the teeithing issues been fixed to my knowledge!
Penn reels are good for sure BUT politely with the new SSM ppl shoul look at other alternatives also like the Daiwa & Banax reels......they stand up & over the current SSM models IMO

Yeah but the main gear now
Yeah but the main gear now isnt Brass on brass in the china. They use a alloy
I know people who have used the china ones up the point and they definatly dont stand up to the pressures of what the usa one will :(
They are failing after a year or 2 of solid action where as my 850 usa is still going strong after 10yrs
