I put mine on the rear skippers side.

I use a briddle rope system with my sea drogue, one end to the middle (mid ship) and the other to the bow cleat. That works well especially when the boat, wind & waves move the boat around!

i have found if you have a canopy the best place is on the skippers side mid ship. if you put it on the back the wind catches in the canopy and pushes you along faster. out the back is great on a calm day if we ever get one 

Bow quarter as well.

I tend to put it at the stern, however I let approx 8 - 10m of V line out. Doing this helps the slow down of the boat and prevents the second wave from splashing into the back of the boat in roughish weather. Also gives Port/ Starboard fishing room.

It's interesting that there are different preferred positions - I've tried stern mounted, side mounted and quarter forward mounted with a bridle as mentioned. I've found I get the slowest drift for conditions by deploying it off the bow cruciform bollard.  To retrieve it, I just come up on it slowly until there is enough slack to bow the 3 strand close to the port side and my deckie pulls it in. Was thinking of making a sliding retrieve rope with a thimbled eye splice. Much easier retreiving over the gunnels/transom than the high fordeck of a cuddy cab - and a lot less messy water wise too.

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions guys I will try swinging it off the rear starboard bollard next time I go out and see if this is a better option.
