Gunwale Rubber

Anybody ever changed out gunwale rubber before? Mines dry & perished & starting to break away, also showing cosmetic fibreglss damage on the top of the rubber.

I'm sure I can source it from Clark Rubber or BIAS, but do I need to use glue or resin to help it hold shape? Any tips or dos & don'ts will be very helpful?

Cheers

The fibre glass guy who fixed ours told us that we were lucky to still have all the rubber intact as it is around $25 a FOOT dont quote me ,but i am quite sure. you will have to check out marine shops for it mate.

Also  to glue it back in place you will need a product called sickaflex i think that is how it is spelt.

We got the guy to do it all re glue and attach hull to deck plus attach the rubber back on only cost $500 aprox.

Try any boating/chandlery shop

Depends on the style required but most were $12 to $15 per meter when I got mine. Have some to replace mine but waiting for a hot day (hahahahaha sure!).
As Russ said get a few tubes of marine quality sikaflex.... "Sticks like $hite to a blanket" borrow a hot air gun and 2 mates.
Leave it out in the sunshine to soften a little... Clamp one end heat up an area about one metre at a time and get the mates to pull/stretch it as you apply the sikaflex and push into position. Reason for heating it is to allow for expansion and contraction in diff weather.

Did my own with a bit of

Did my own with a bit of advice from Wilson Marine and it came up like new. They supplied the gunwale rubber and the tubes of Sikaflex. You will need a few rolls of high strength masking tape also to assist with holding the rubber whist in the drying process. Definately do the job on a warm day or use a panel beaters heating lamp, this makes the rubber ALOT more flexible and ALOT easier to fit up. You will also find it easier using a rubber mallet. This will ensure the "pinchwell" area of the gunwale presses right onto the hull join.
