Fishwrecked Standards

This is getting very frustrating for the moderators, with more posts and threads having to be deleted recently.
PLEASE CAN WE ALL REFRAIN FROM USING ANY SEXUALLY EXPLICIT OR IMPLICIT LANGUAGE NO MATTER HOW FUNNY WE THINK IT MIGHT BE.
This site does not have an automatic swear word eliminator, so it would be appreciated if we all self moderate in this regard as well.
Furthermore this is not a private chat room for mates to take the mickey out of each other with innuendo after innuendo. Go join MSN if that's what you want to do. Leave this site to talking about fishing please, or at the very least keep it clean.
With the site growing as fast as it has it is impossible for the three moderators to read every post, so we are sure there are plenty of posts that have slipped through the net.
We need not remind you all that we have many children on this site as both active members and casual viewers. We also have sponsors too, so lets not degrade the fantastic community facility this website has become by continually pushing the language boundaries for a few cheap laughs.
With over 2.6m hits a month this site is a lot bigger than you might think. Wilst a few hundred members dominate the forum boards there are many many thousands more that read but don't post.
We don't like being the fun police but we have broader interests to protect here, so we trust you all understand when we say that we will not hesitate to ban repeat offenders if this issue persists.
Regards
Fishwrecked Moderators

I think you are right Matt

With more than 10 new members a day signing up at the moment let alone the thousands that don't post, the word is spreading fast , but with Adam regularly working offsite and Tim interstate, I am thinking we need to increase our moderator team pretty soon.
I will talk to Adam and see if we can sort something out.
Those that know me well, know I am certainly no prude and have a potty mouth as bad as the rest, but we simply cannot afford to allow this site to degenerate as others have in the past. Hence my plea to all to help keep this site the best fishing site in the country.

Cheers

Report bad post icons

Thu, 2008-05-15 19:25

I have never seen a problem myself but of course i am fairly new, but some forums i visit have a *report bad post* icon in the corner of the writers page, then you have 100's of pairs of eyes on the lookout for inappropiate posts.

Folks click the icon and write down their comments about what they did not approve off, i am sure everyones heard of it, but something to consider ?

Can't be any clearer than that, keep it clean and directed at Fishing thats why this site is so successful.

Community

Thu, 2008-05-15 20:39

Fishwrecked has grown into a fairly wide reaching community now and while we might think some of the posts that have been removed lately have just been a bit of fun between mates the Mods have to consider the interests of all of the members of the site Young and Old.

We dont want to take the Fun out of the site but as Andy has pointed out many of the threads are turning into mainly innuendo and stirring and are starting to become the norm around here.

If you want to continue carrying on that way take it to PMs or MSN or the Mods will have no option but to Ban the offenders.

Was ready to post some great

Thu, 2008-05-15 23:38

Was ready to post some great pics of tonight but once again no matter how far you hold back you still get nailed!

The interest that is shown in this site is fishing, but more than that and a bit of fun gets people buzzing and attracts interest.

Call it what you will and I do respect the responsibilty of Adam and what his site stands for but when it gets to the stage that I have to read posts a couple of times so I dont offend people its time for me to move on!

Adam has told me on many occasions that he has had numerous complaints against me so for the people who I have offended I appologise but I still believe that more people get a laugh than are offended.

Cheers for the great people who I have met and no doubt will keep in contact with!

One thing though,The site is only as good as its content and it takes all sorts!

As I have said, obviously i'm the wrong shaped peg for the hole!

All the best

!IT SMELLS LIKE FISH IT MUST BE GOOD FOR YOU!

The only people you offend

Fri, 2008-05-16 06:30

The only people you offend Goat are those people on here with no bloody sense of humor its the aussie way to take the piss .With out people like yourself on here its going to dull down alot we might as well go out and start buying copies of knitting magazines and having nanna naps .I notice Tim youve changed your avatar does mean something else. do we have to have follow suit and as i said what about user names Ive been called Shag since i was 10 all ways hated the name Shannon so mates called me Shagga then Shag but some people think its another meaning and not the little black bird that swims. Its going to be a shame to see people like Goat leave but thats the path fishwrecked is on thats how it has to be .Myself as a parent i sit here with my boys and flick through with out fear of whats going to pop up next on this site. Its a great site guys but it will be a shame to see if it becomes to serious and orderly part of the attraction to this site was that it was a good fun fishing site .CHEERS SHAG

Whats next we wont be able to call a black arse a black arse wouldnt want to offend anyone

Hard Job!

Fri, 2008-05-16 07:07

Maybe everyone with strong feelings on (both sides of) this issue just needs to take a long slow breath and count to 10 Laughing. Having moderated forums before, I know that it is a VERY difficult job and, on many occassions, you may agonise over a decision or feel like a right (not nice person). Whatever line you take, you risk always offending someone. I think Adam, Andy and Tim do a really good job and this forum runs very well and the incredible growth is a testament to the good stuff.

On the non-fishing content, it's a hard one. As has been said, don't want to make the forum too constraining and we are social animals and there are related topics. No one has PMed me complaining about my non-fishing content - after all we do have a 'general' thread - but, if the majority prefer I reign things in a bit - I'm more than happy to comply. Laughing If you have feelings about my content (and I know Andy this wasn't you thrust, but others may want to input), by all means, send me a PM, don't just stew on it. Laughing

I think it's great to see new members. Especially the younger ones - their thirst for knowledge and inaugral enthusiasm allows us to relive the wonderful and exciting days when we all started fishing - and that's a wonderful thing.

Are you serious?????????

Fri, 2008-05-16 07:06

FFS!!!

I would think this site is attracting such a large interest, not only for the invaluable knowledge given so willingly, but because of the ecclectic mix of personalities within it. It is these people who are the core and essence of a forum.

Sex is THE most powerful marketing tool known. It sells...and we are surrounded by it every day, all day! On TV, in Mags, Music (plenty of it there) and all over the internet! Have you actually seen the content of Rave lately, and it competes directly with the cartoons and kiddies programs on in the mornings on weekends.

It is a long time since I have seen anything blatant on here which would concern me as a parent, and if too heavy a hand is used to censor inuendo, I fear this site's light hearted banter within the threads will cease, and will becoming staid and colourless!

And that would be a........ Bugger!!!

NoWorries's picture

OK Peoples.

Fri, 2008-05-16 07:50

I think that all that Andy, Tim and Adam are saying is take it back a notch, not be all goodie two shoes and never mention the S work or imply it.

Goat it would be a shame for you to leave the site as you shoot from the hip and do actually catch fish and post them up. Hopefully Adam and the boys could set up a sealed 18+ Goat sectionSmile

Occasionally I have seen things said on the site that may be offensive and I have sent PM's to the people letting them know, usually the person involved didn't mean to offend and see's the error and corrects it.

Im sure all of us don't want to see the site be a nanny site like other WA fishing sites.

Keep it fair and play on like Luke said.

I really can't be bothered

I honestly haven't seen anything that bad. I have seen worst things on billboards on the side of the road or on the radio while driving around with my kids

I enjoy a laugh and a banter and to share some fishing experiences and help anyone who needs some help so obviously this is not the place for me.

I would rather read a bible

Fri, 2008-05-16 08:11

We need not remind you all that we have many children on this site as both active members and casual viewers.

While your on the watch out for children thing, you may need to have a spell check and dictionary available on here as for all the bad spelling and wording cant be good for the little darlings, after all they would never get it from elsewere.

cheers dennis

I personally beleive kids

Fri, 2008-05-16 08:20

I personally beleive kids shouldnt be on any internet chat site unsupervised anyway so if a parent lets them surf the net talking to strangers a s word here or there is the least of there worries CHEERS SHAG

Read the post again guys

Fri, 2008-05-16 09:03

This site certainly is an ecclectic mix and all have been welcomed and will continue to be welcomed with open arms and an open mind. Benefit of the doubt plays a big part on this site, for those with good memories. Wink
Where we have to make such statements every now and then is to (as Lindsay says) remind everyone to take it back a peg or two.
There is nothing wrong with a good sledge as Shag said but all we are saying is that it need not be so blatantly sexual as has been seen of late.
Many of you would be wondering, what we are going on about and may think, well, I havent seen these posts, so these guys must be really prudish (sorry no spell check). The answer to that is that we remove the offending posts as soon as we find them.
Like it or not, this is a very broad community and since many of us know eachother personally it is easy to forget that it isn't a private chat room.
We have always been very liberal with what we allow on the site and have allowed people a lot of latitude in some areas, but unfortunately we have to set guidelines just like any community. If the boundaries keep getting pushed we will keep having to remind the community of their existance. I see no harm in doing that. In fact 99% of all moderating is invisible to the community as it is done by a lot of pm's. Occaissionally when the pm's haven't had their impact we need to make a public statement, which is what we have done.
If we fail to moderate we risk a site where many more get offended, if we moderate we seemingly offend many people by being seen as kill joys. Damned if we do and damned if we don't. This is not an easy gig I can assure you.
If you want to sit there and think the world as we know it has changed and fishwrecked will grind to a halt because a moderator posts a reminder about language and innuendo, then if that is the only thing that drives you to post on here I am speechless.Surprised
As for characters on here, I too enjoy the banter that goes on, but a test of character is to accept that there are boundaries and play on within them. I'd hate to see anyone leave over something as trivial as this, but I am not going to simply widen the boundaries just to suit a few.
As Luke said initially "fair bump - play on"Wink

Cheers

...and don't come back

Fri, 2008-05-16 10:07

I'm glad Rutar's pissing off.... he makes me feel insecure posting photo's week after week of fish I can only dream about catching.... I'm getting the feeling there's quite a few people on here that share that sentiment....

Lol

Sarcasm intended...

yep

Fri, 2008-05-16 10:08

I understand what your saying Andy, but who is more valuable to the site, 100 kids or one Rutar, Who attracts more hits to this site?

After all its Adams site and he can do what he wants, but i agree with shag. you should be 18 to post on any forum with adults, then you would have these problems.

Yeah would be a shame people left because they  are forced to change,  i call a spade a shovel when i see it, and its probably why i am banned on most fishing sites around the country and its why i don't post here often. as rutar said that's me and if ya cant post what you think well its best to stay away i think.

interesting thread that for sure.

No one has been banned Wally

Fri, 2008-05-16 10:33

The words "General" at the front of the post suggest this is a message to the wider community not one or two individuals.
There is no sense in debating who attracts more hits than another, if that was the case, perhaps we should just let those at the top of the "attraction list" post whatever they want with no rules or moderation and see where that takes us.Surprised
Maybe a welcome all spammers sign on the front page? Plenty of hits there.Wink I should know, I had to manuallly delete over 150 of their posts on grand final day last year.
The interesting thing is that this site has grown and continues to grow, whilst we have not once changed our moderation stance on the language issue since its inception, and those with long memories will remember times when we have had these exact same discussions time and time again.
When your child crosses the line, you tell them to pull their heads in, but it doesn't mean you don't still love them. I think that those taking offence to this line we are taking will actually appreciate that fact when the dust settles and we all have a reality check.
If people think we as moderators are overly sensitive by trying to moderate sexual innuendo, then perhaps the same people are being overly sensitive about the request for self moderation, which is what this particular thread is all about.

Cheers

Yay

Fri, 2008-05-16 10:37

Wooooo hooo, off the site for a couple of days to find this. Goat and Bill have been warned about their content before and obviously theres been something since which has crossed the line, which I will read into when I get back to Exmouth tomorrow. I have full trust in Andy and Tim to look after the best interests of this site whilst I am away.

Personally I really dont see why its just so hard to refrain from making sexual connotations on a fishing website. You guys have been told, I cant remember how many times now, but you constantly want to continue to push the boundaries and I guess there has to be a breaking point.

I dont want you guys to leave and I dont want anyone to feel constrained in what they say, all we ask is that you take some consideration in what you post!

I'm sure this sort of thread has happened god knows how many times over the last 3 years, all I know is that this site will continue and will continue without sexual innuendo that may offend. You guys have been warned heaps, I just dont see why it has to be so hard. Keep the gutter talk for out on the boat and the fishing talk for the forums, if thats too hard, then I'll catch you on the water some day.

Cheers,

Adam

* I'm done with this stuff, back to fishing. THREAD CLOSED.  If you want to discuss this further, PM me.
