12, 24, 240volts

Hi Guys.

After a bit of advice.

On the boat we have 12, 24 or 240 volt now I want to keep the 12 and 240 but what is the 24 volt really benificial for ? There is a switch to switch between 12 and 24 and if it is set to 24 the anchor winch does not work but it seems that everything else does (that does not run on 240 of course). If it is set to 12 volt as far as we have seen everything works bar a few lights, so why is there 24 volts ???

Any sparkys here ??

i can see no point to 24v on

i can see no point to 24v on a trailer boat at all ... unless the old owners managed to source cheap 24v parts off a pro boat and needed to make them work. 24v systems are usually used on pro boats so large battery banks can be used to start bigger motors and run hydrolics and big winches etc.

The motor thing sounds about right.

Do you have a seperate

Do you have a seperate battery up forward for your anchor winch?

Not that it means anything just trying to figure why the anchor winch stops when switching to 24V. I figure they are stealing the supply from that battery and putting it in series with the normal supply to give you the 24V.

As feral said high power DC equipment is generally 24V as the double the voltage halfs the amperage so smaller cable sizes and equipment sizes.

Sounds like you have a complicated little setup. I could take a gander at for you but the boats not a trailer boat you said so where is it.
