Exmouth Dolphinfish

Hi All

I have been going to Exmouth now for many years,
fishing land based and by boat but have never had the
pleasure of catching or even seeing a dolphin fish.
Where in exy do you get them? Is there any special way to fish for them?
Any info would be helpful. Thanks

You can pick them up

You can pick them up trolling for other stuff. The double G's and Matt picked up a few. In the US they look for floating weed mats (natural FADs), but not quite sure if you can target them like that in exxy. Apparently you dont get them hanging around weed mats here (from someone whos fished for them here and off california/mexico where thats how you target them)

You do get them under structure here, but not as often as open water.  They are still about but not in great numbers, the water temp has dropped heaps in the last couple of weeks.  Trolling small skirted lures around is the best bet, brighter the colours the better, lumo's and pinks being the go to.

Are there areas which are better than others?
Gulf? Tantabiddi?

What is the best bait for them if using a floater?

Plenty out there

Fished out of Tantabiddi many times and always caught plenty of dollies as a by catch from trolling for marlin. Every time we get near weed ,as Adam said, we would get a hookup. Seem to be at all depths from the back of the reef to beyond the 500mtr line. If there is some floating structure you will find the dollies. The good old mulies work well as a floater but the sharks tend to find it first.
Stick to trolling when you find the weed and you have a good chance.

pulling lures around a bit that dollies love green/yellow/gold, I've got a large green and yellow pusher for billies but every time the sucker hits the water it gets nailed by bloody dollies, gotta hate that,,,not
