Legal # of hooks

G'day...

Quick question for ya's...

What's the maximum legal number of hooks you are allowed to fish with on one line?

How are snelled/ganged/trebles viewed in light of the rules (are two snelled hooks on one dropper loop classified as two hooks or just the one?)?

Might be a silly question... but I'm currently knocking up some traces (swells a wee to big for me)... and I'm snelling two hooks on one dropper; two droppers per rig... and in the back of my mind I'm thinking 3 is the legal max. # of hooks allowed on one rig... so am I over?

cheers,
damo

snelled and ganged hooks are

snelled and ganged hooks are deemed as i hook.  max of 3 per rig is correct... a better way of wording it would be no more than 3 baits per line imo...( thats to fisheries not you...)

Thanks Luke.... share your sentiments.... "3 baits per line" is a lot clearer.
Cheers

dont believe so.... its hard

dont believe so.... its hard to find the written facts... i ended up ringing fisheries... and after explaining what snelled hooks where!! they were able to help. i think as long as the bait is presenatble, and not a thousand hooks in a whole fish or something stupid , i t really comes down to how many baits on one line...

hope this helps

i've had in my mind for some

Snell

For ballooning big gars etc we use to gang a 7/0 ( in the head) 3 X 9/0 ( thru the body)then another 7/0 (in the tail) and a big 9/0 treble at the end,so 5 hooks and a treble to make up 1 bait .

I seem to recall hearing

I seem to recall hearing somewhere that you can have a maximum of 4 hooks to a gang. You can use mono/snells instead of gangs for your big baits, but toothy fish would be a problem....does anyone know if it's possible to tie snells with "knotable" wire? Then there'd be no need at all for gangs, and no wondering how many hooks are legal?

Steel wire

I snell hooks in 7 strand and 49 strand wire , no problems , I don't really like the gangs where you put the hook thru the eye of the other hook , I don't think I get as many hook ups to the snelled hooks , only time I do hook to hook is when using single strand wire .

Doesnt andys supersneel use

Sat, 2008-07-05 21:56

Doesnt andys supersneel use some wire (ends up inside the squid)?

There is knotable steel wire that you can snell with, then theres the lock weld stuff you may be able to use (not sure about snelling with it though).

I have actually snelled a hook using single strand wire to see if you could do it and it seemed to hold up ok, but I havent actually used it in practice. I guess you could weight test it first though and be reasonably confident.

edit: you could rig a sliding snell for the top hook, and the bottom hook as usual with a crimp (or a haywire if using single strand). Though, the bottom hook needs to be on for the the second to stay (say if it gets bitten off). Though, I guess using wire it shouldnt get bitten off and you could use a stopper crimp anyways.
I use some thinner mono for the sliding snell (when on mono), but it tends to seize a bit after a lot of use, so gone back to  fixed snells til i can find something better. Heatshrink perhaps?

Bit of an aside but those

Bit of an aside but those Owner boa rigs are pretty interesting. Its a moveable knot that you can set to your bait length with a  bit of stuffing around.

Tried some of those, but the mono is a bit thin and the knot doesnt work anywhere near as good as you'd think. Cant get it to move after hand tightening, so i wouldnt trust it budging after a fish. Plus the bottom hook does not have an eye, just a flattened head, but the edges are sharp and can cut through the mono. I love their hooks and other terminal tackle, but some of their other stuff hasnt quite been up to the same standard.
