Site Sponsoring

Hi All,

I don't know who else has notice but another WA Fishing website has started putting up Sponsored Links banners on there site.

I am all for sponsoring but when you start getting "NoName random Health, Credit, ETC" links on a FISHING website IMO it looks tacky and desperate. These type of banners make me think that if I click on it i will get a heap of spam, porn and some Nigerian Prince will come over to my house and demand the money that he "Loaned me".

Im sure the links are legit but if it is still the same rate of payment where you get about 2c per click is it really worth making your website look tacky ??

This is just my opinion !!

You havent seen ausfish have you?

The advertising here is the way it should be, only a single banner with sites that would actually be useful to people here (and ones such as oceanside, compleat or tackleshack I didnt even know about except from here). Oh and the Montebellos charters to the right which you barely notice (and is again completely suited)

Hang on

Yeah I see what you mean, Pop ups really annoy me but the other ads aren't that in your face and tacky looking.

Can understand where you're coming from Lindsay, and I'd prefer fishing/boating related content, but I guess I'd rather prefer adds than a payment. Yeah Hlokk, Ausfish is shocking - even floating video adds. But if you want to see something really 'special' have a look at some of the American sights. Yeeks!

Fishing and Boating related only

Tue, 2008-07-08 11:22

That's our strong preference at the moment. I can't see us heading in any other direction in fact we have turned away advertising that didn't fit with the site's direction.
Having said that, this site doesn't run on fresh air so we need advertisers to keep it going.
Naturally we would welcome any feedback on how this site is run and how our use of advertising impacts.
Obviously any negative comments would be preferably pm'd to either Adam or myself.
"Please support our advertisers as they support our site." is a comment we want to be confident in saying. I don't think that would be the case with any random product advertising, so we won't be going down that path and trying hard to keep it relevant to fishing, boating, camping and 4WD. That's about it.Wink

Cheers

Yeah I agree, but no use bagging them out as you won't win especially on their site. First ever time I have ever heard a fishing site use the threat of charging punters as an excuse for the new advertising they have. Not suprised though........

Tue, 2008-07-08 12:19

I like most would simply prefer fishing or tackle related ads, accommodation from places with grand fishing etc, charters, tackle shops, boat sites, boat shows.

I suppose it comes down to beggars can't be choosers.... deal with it or stop visiting the site as one of the mods said, simple as that.

cheers

Yep I Agree

I know enough about Football, Cricket and crap allready so i won't bother with WAngler anymore. Laughing

Its a shame as It used to be a great site many moons ago.

Good thing that Fishwrecked is a great site.

ps: Scotty i know you will be reading this, I hope your site does become a great "FISHING"site once again one day.

Before anyone has a crack

Tue, 2008-07-08 13:27

Having just read the thread in question, I help out here on a voluntary basis and receive no income from this site whatsoever. I respect that other sites are more a commercial venture and need to subsidise any way they can, this is more a community venture and as such is free of charge.
There is a big difference between the two. One having spun off from a commercial venture the other having started from a non-commercial venture.
Who knows, one day things may change but I am sure I can speak for Adam in saying that this website forum has always been intended to be a community thing and will remain so. Any potential for commercial gain aside from the merchandise sales would be kept well away from this forum.
Its much harder to go the other way around and not subsidise your costs. Therefore I totally understand what the other site is doing.
Please don;t get into an "us" and "them" thread as it doesn't benefit anyone.

Cheers

Again Wally, "insert foot in mouth"....your so wrong! I haven't sold my soul as i've always done things from my heart including when Steve C offered me plenty of $$$$ to partcipate in guiding/teaching/showing and i said "i'd never go down that ally" so cut the crapWink

As for the problem, no probplem but you seem to fabricate sh!t by the look and Scotty and i spoke today just a normal catch up phone call and one of the many things we discussed was this. I told him i dont like it (straight shooter) "but" understand that this for some is the way to cover cost!

Dont Care

Tue, 2008-07-08 17:58

To be honest I dont really care what they do. Personally didnt find it that big a deal as its only 1 banner across the top.

Also it does cost money to run these sorts of sites and if thats how they choose to recover some of those costs so be it. Nobodys forced to go on there.

I dont personaly have a problem with it.

Maybe I am just used to seeing banner adds on every other forum type I visit.

What it does say to me is that there is an obvious advertising opportunity to all in the fishing/boating/tourist industry that is not being fully utilised.

Wed, 2008-07-09 20:00

You're close but not quite there.

You can see in the links the browser is fetching to render the page, its waiting the longest for that banner. The page loads first, but it has to know whats in the banner before it will bother rendering the page and thats because it has to fetch it from an external source.

The Banner is hosted on another site. Therefore WA needs to fetch the banner each time the page loads increasing the page load time.

Interesting

Sun, 2008-07-13 20:32

Personally I don't like those sort of adverts, but hey, its not my website so I don't give a rats.

I never started this site for money and its never really going to be about the money for me.  Mind you, I'd be silly not to make the most of the opportunity that the success of this site has afforded me.

I can assure you this much though that this site will never resort to that type of advertising, I don't need to sell my soul for a dollar.  I guess thats why I added the donation component so you guys could help me pay for the upgrades, rather than going down that avenue.

Its pretty easy really, if you don't like it, don't visit it.  Sounds like you've added some insightful comments there Marty, appreciate your contributions.  Guess if your over here again your bored of the berley bucket...

Cheers,

Adam
