In my experience night diving in the ocean for prawns we have had mixed success on a full moon but mainly poor, in the river they may be different or they just get washed down with the current.
To all the virgins..............Thanks for nothing!
My catch rate didn't change last night, but I did have a strong urge to howl after catching each prawn. Might of effected my navigation though...ran into a couple of dodgy looking blokes on exiting.
Do you only get the prawns when diving on the bottom? Or are they going out with the outgoing tide? (Dont know what the tides are doing at the mooment?)
Am wondering if you could get a feed of prawns at the moment on a boat dabbing for them? or even kicking for them in the shallows?
Any advice of where to go , of if we could get a feed using these methods, would be awsome!!! ive not done prawning in the swan before, but alot in Mandurah. At the moment on good nights, you get maybe a half kilo but they are not very big.
When the tide is racing out after the first real rains the dabbers do well but it is hit and miss.
Generally the dabbers get up there from late April-June and can get great feeds but this time of the year there is a heap of fresh water on the top of the saltwater which keeps them down!
As for kicking I'm not sure.I 'm the same as you Bodie and spent my time as a kid dabbing and kicking at Mandurah but when the cut was put through I lost touch with the seasons as it changed and the prawns started running in December!
I remember dragging the shallows with our prawn net a few years back in around Mossie Bay, Pt Walter and that place round the corner from the Canning bridge, always used to get a good feed. Not sure if its as productive these days, but probably worth going for a drag to see.
You used see heaps of people dragging but you never see it any more. When I was younger we used to do it but the prawn were heaps smaller than the ones goat and bill etc are catching!
I have a drag net, altho not done it for a long time..
Might be worth having a crack at point walter on sat night!!!!
Im not a huge Fan of drag nets, alot of other things get killed during the process, altho i am always very careful with removing everything, and usually only do small drags to limit the number of things i dont want!
Ban on prawn hand trawl (drag) nets – Due to the impact on juvenile crab stocks the use of hand trawl (drag) nets has been banned in all waters of the Leschenault and Peel-Harvey estuaries from 6 July 2007. This ban also applies to the Peel Estuary's tributaries, including the Serpentine and Murray rivers. Hand dip nets for school and king prawns can still be used.

Will be interesting to see the comparative results between dragging and diving by the guys.
Don't forget, if you catch some and post a pic, we want nothing less than spectacular presentation

Yeah could be worth a try, but as Goat said they are those little river prawns not these fat kings I keep see on here.

Check the regs
before you go drag netting.
"I think" the reason you dont see anyone doing it anymore is because it's illeagle now in the Swan.

Doesnt say anyting about the swan
Ryan Thipthorp
No ban in the Swan on prawn drag nets!
You are allowed to use prawn drag nets in the Swan River in all the main area's that people have been going to over the years!
CALM have only a few small sanctioned area's (doesn't effect the good/main areas) so yeh ALL LEGAL!
