What does everyone do for a living
Well the time has come for me to build a bigger house for my Mrs and kids plus the expecting twins in October ,I mix with quite a few people off the site but was thinking I havent seen a topic about what we do for a crust and i though it would be handy .Most of the house will be done by the builder but some of the work is going out to people from here. So i suppose here we go and i'll start.
Im an Underground Production Supervisor up in leinster and have been there for just over 13 years now , main duties are supervising a crew of up to 20 people ( yes men and women ) , managing equipment from specialised underground loaders , tele - remote loaders , production drills and tele-remote drills , explosives planning loading and firing , scheduling of production tonnes ect . The mine we work at is approximately 10 kilometres down by road to the bottom or over 1000 metres in a straight line . We produce over 150,000 tonnes of nickel loaded dirt every month and work a 8 day shifts on 7 days off and 7 nights on 7 days off roster , temperatures at the moment have been into the 0 degrees range . The actual township of Leinster is a closed town with visitors allowed access to the carvan park as an on route stope only so bsically if you dont work in the area or provide support Bhpb you cant live there , the town has about 800 peramnent residers and about 2000 fly in fly out workers . We have a wetmess and a tavern and all our meals are provided and the mine is serviced by Alliance , skywest and national jet plane service . Ok thats enough how about other people

Im a registered nurse, so not much fishing in my job, if only catheters had drag systems:P I have however looked after a few fisho's that have had fishing accidents. Mainly big barbed hooks stuck in limbs, those circle hooks can be nasty, people often underestimate how sharp they really are.

Great variety
of skills there everyone. I manage a branch of a commercial irrigation company - we do things like schools, subdivisions and anything else we can see a quid in. It is very like running a kindy for adults at times. Worst part of it is my big noting brother has promised we ( that is ME ) will install 2 systems for his mates when we go to Denham next month. Did the same last year and sat on his blot while the others worked.

Between jobs - varied - applied...
Between jobs at the moment. Started of in accountancy - got bored with that - went into the WA Public Service (clerical work), first at the Water Corp(mainly rating and parliamentary liaison), then selected for an I.T paid retraining program. Finished that and went into Mainframe small systems development, then computer operations, the production support - promoted to a position ar WAPOL - left that, went into real estate - too many hours and never saw my wife, so went into Ecommerce with Telstra - bored with that and wanted to come down here - so went back into rating in local government - MAD times, coordinated legacy system and data remediation and transparent migration to a new whole of business system (NEVER again) - was working 80 hours a week for 3 months - burnt out and buggered off LOL.
Have a few irons in the fire with an interview today as a Business Support Officer at Main Roads and have applied for one of the DoF Fisheries and Marine Officers...

I can sympathise Col
my wife is doing the migration onto a new system for the local Shire - nil co-operation from the old guard and the vendors are not overly on the ball. Still, at least it is work in her profession which is not generally avaliable in the bush.

Yes Ian!
It's a massive, massive task. The hardest parts were:
1) Data remediation.
2) Identification of functionality and surrounding issues.
3) Fear of Change / entrenched attitudes.
4) Discordant time lines.
5) Staff turn over/change/burn out at both ends.
6) Getting past 'the gloss'
7) Poor vendor second tier support.
8) Whole of process ownership.
9) Resource competition.
10) Long term tailorability and scaling vs short term easier adoption.
..oh I could go on LOL

Bloody hell, put a dress on you, stick a glass of SSB in your hand and you're my missus! I have been through hell too being the whipping boy and punching bag at the end of the day. And the worst thing is my son sits there and gabbles computerspeak back at her, which makes him the Golden Boy. I am an admitted computer moron in a house where my wife has a Masters in IT, my daughter a PHD in IS and my son a diploma in IT - terrific fun for me who can't use the remote.

Hey Feral
Sparkie
Run my own business....heaps of fun and have a great bunch of blokes working for me.
Feral,
Just some history for you...used to work at Lienster for Hardwyck Electrical. We worked the surface (in those days was shaft). I ran the installation of the sub-contractors camp on the way out to the mine. Mess first,Wetmess next then the accom...mainy days got busted in the wet mess instead of work Ha Ha.
Once that was done I moved onto the caravan park installation. Leaving shortly after that was finished.
Now that was 20 odd years ago man we had a ball. Heaps of parties in town and at the wet mess.
Cheers

There is not shorter
There is not shorter conversation than this:
You: 'What do you do for a living?'
Me: 'I work for a church.'
...............................................................................................
ha ha!! That's what brought me here to Oz, though I'd never done it before. I love my work here, and it gives me a bit of time here and there to wet a line. Most of my work has to do with helping people in need. Brenz always gets a laugh when I walk into the Tackle Shack with my 'Jesus was homeless' T-shirt on!! If you live near Ballajura and want to visit us some time, just send me a pm.
Before doing this I worked in excavation running a backhoe, and did a bit of welding when i was younger. The last five years before I moved here I ran my own landscaping/lawn care business. Rich Americans have big gardens and will pay heaps to not have to do the work themselves!

Keep looking for what that next thing is, but can never find something with the flexibility and income to keep me in toys and with time to use them. Having kids certainly fixed up one of those problems(time).
