Geybanded cod. We have a stupid rule here that fish all grey banded cods, hapuka, bass groper, and blue eyed trevella, over 1 meter have to be released. Considering they all come from 200+ meters thats a fish killed for nothing. I dont know what they where trying to achieve with that rule.

Stupid rule! it's to protect

Wed, 2008-10-01 17:33

Stupid rule! it's to protect the large cods up north that are in shallow water from Divers and Fisherman which is a good thing, The fisheries didn't take into consideration Deep Sea fish which being pulled from 200m+ are stuffed. I didn't think the rule included the other fish you mentioned NOHA, I thought it was just Cod?? I've seen a 1.5m Cod released which floated away dead, This guy was wrapped and was happy with just that fish, but because he had to release it he carried on fishing hoping to catch a smaller one which he did, so 2 fish end up dead instead of 1. I have spoke to the fisheries about this and this officers reply was thats the rules it goes back into the food chain and don't get caught bringing one in. Hopefully the rule will get looked at and changed?

They made them into there

Wed, 2008-10-01 18:30

They made them into there own catorgory to give them a bag limit, as before they had none, which is a good move. But then stuck the 1 meter rule on them too which is bizarre.

As you say you are allowed 2 fish. One comes up over a meter/approx 20kg, considering these fish get to 35kg for the cod and arround 100kg for the others, happens all too frequently. That fish comes up dead, stone dead, there is no revival, so it floats away and you catch another. So 3 fish die instead of 2.

The hapuka I have caught looked like they could go back, still kicking and no distention, but the cods are stuffed as they float up to the surface fully blown.

I think they are in the same

I think they are in the same category as for bag limit but i think it's only the Cod that has the 1m rule? They use the scientific name which is the same as seperate listing under Cods etc, why can't they use the common name? I'm so ConfusedYell

maybe take a bbq with you.... have a rippa feed while fishing ;)

maybe we could do a pettition and show the new minister tha facts about fishing deep...what happens with these fish....anybody fishing this wide, take pics of the fish...both on board to give a indication of its size, and in the water...floating away dead!!!!! maybe then they will realise the stupidity of this rule......

probably end up banning fishing deep then ( rolls eyes)

if you take it to the

Wed, 2008-10-01 19:18

if you take it to the word.... the fisheries west coast fishing guide states its the genus "epinephelus sp." over 1 m must be returned... that means grey banded cod ( epinephelus ergastularius  or septemfasciatus) and the "bass grouper" cant find its scientific name but would imagine it is in the epinepgelus genus .

hapuka/hapuku (polyprion oxygeneios) and blue eye trevella ( hyperoglyphe antarctica) are in another genus all together... so technically wouldnt fall under this rule....

this is technically, and you would be best to look yourselves to make up your owbn minds.... but that is my take on the ruleing....

Grey Band

Wed, 2008-10-01 19:32

From what I have read and the Fish species it is only the Grey Banded Rock Cod that has the 1m rule out of those species. Bass Groper Scientific name is Polyprion Americanus from what I could find out so it does not come under the 1m rule.

Still a combined max limit of 2 in total for all of those species.

Your right I just had

Your right I just had another look. The 1 mter only applies to the greybanded.

Thats good because hapuka and bass groper chew better than greybandedLaughing
