hi all,
im after some info on sharkbay for around the last week in sept-first week in oct.weather wise is it blowing from the south buy then or is it nice on the water and what about the temp is it warm?
or would exmouth be better, but the only thing with exmouth is the extra drive twice the distance for towing the boat.
thanks dennis

Cold Water
If you look at the water temps for SBay at tht time of the year, below
You'll see it's still quite cold at the tail end of winter so you can only expect the southern varietys of fish like snapper tailor etc...
If thats what your after and you accept the wndy cold days of spring...then thats what SBay will deliver!
Looking at these pics - you see the amount of relatively shallow water in S/Bay. The thing with this shallow water as the tep photo's above shows - is they warm up quick in summer Dec Jan Feb and even early Mar, but as I found out one year - one days wind fromn the south makes the same warm shallow waters freezing bloody cold overnight!
Whats good about S/Bay when the water warm you can get the warmer tropical waters fish in shark bay, as well as the usual colder water ones that are there all the time!
So - if warm deep water pelagics like spanish macks and longtail tuna's etc are your target and warm shallow water fishes like bonefish etc are your target - theres not a lot of point chasing them in Shark Bay in October!
Thats just how it is!
If you want the warm water action you have to tarvel further north for it at that time of year - or wait till feb mar and go to Shark bay!
My take on it!
Cheers!

thanks
thanks guys,
flywest i was thinking the air temp for me lol... but thanks for the graphs there good will fish for any thing dont realy care just was hoping the wind would be ok,last time we went up it was august and we got some pinkies and some blue manners crabs,
and saw some surface fish but didnt get any.went to exmouth in oct-nov
3 years ago and the south easterly was cranking most days but still got into some fish, but will be happy if the weather is warmer than here.
cheers dennis
.
No worries!
I remember talkin Starlo up there to Tammala in August after one of the Perth Boat Shows, and it was fine but cold - bloody cold for a dip / wash each morning!
We did catch fish, pinky's mostly,, but having experienced the place in warmer waters around Early March I inow theres no comparison!
Strange how mostof the folks escaping the winter down south head for Shark Bay in July or Oct School hols when its still cold!
I guess it's reputation for catching Pinkies is what the place is built on for school hols fishers - but when you see the action there in Feb - it's hard to fathom why anyone would go any other time.
One day in Feb a few years back Morsie and Myself and a couple others were fishing a big sand spit in the Eastern Gulf!
There was this rackett going on offshore- you almost needed earmuffs for peace and quiet and had to shout to speak and be heard.
Evenetiually we couldn't stand it anymore and set off in my punt to try nd see what it was all about! There was ocean whipped to foam as far as you could see a few miles out - tuna's sailfish spanish macks etc etc going apeshyte - about 10 gazzilion birds in the meelee!
We got there at the tail end of it - but I've never seen anything like it before or since!
There musta been 1o's of 1ooo's of tonnes a fish going off - probably marlin in amongst it s well coz everything else was! Remember - this is in the relatively shallow waters of the easern gulf!
The place acn REALLY turn it on some days - when things arejust right, and the tides / maori fishing charts / moon phase temps etc all play a part in it!
Every day we saw acres and acres of schools of anchovies, swimming along the beach - with giant herring and huge tailor in atendance and even longtail tuna's hasseling them in only 10 feet of water!
Theres nothing competes with Shark bay IMHO - when it turns it on!
Course when it's cold and shut down - you still get fish - you just have to work a little harder for them is all!
Having said all that - if I was alwed to fish the Salt mine settleing pond for the rest of my life as private water - I could die a happy man I reckon!
The size variety & qualtity of fish in there just has to be seen to be believed!
It's recogniseable as the light green coloured water walled off in useless loop in this photo!
I've seen schools of tailor in there, so big at first I thought they were 40 pound spanish macks!
Everything that lives in there is a macs supersize that please representative of it's species!
Heck - even if you had to sneak in and poach the place - everyone should fish it at least once in their lifetime! ;o)
The salt mine take a dim view of it fpr a few reasons - they need the fish life to keep algal blooms from staining the salt green, and they are responsble for any deaths / injurys while your on their mining lease not to mentiuon in the past anglers have deliberately wedged the tide operated sluice gates open and allowed the concentrated supersaline water to escape - putting production targets back and costing a lot of lost production $.
Shame really - coz the fishing in there is world class!
Cheers!

Flood gates
Ive been to the flood gates and did some work on the turtle mesh/walkway, when i first seen the tailor cruisin up und back on a rising tide we didnt know what they were, they were huge.
my boss at the time hooked one and he called it for one of the many nohas that patrol the salty side when the water rushes through. huge pale snapper with big black sores all over them, massive western yellowfin bream, mulloway, golden trev's was an awsome spot. off the ship loader aswell massive cobia, snapper, mulloway hard work from a great height on handlines
