I thought it was a baitball, but when we have sounded over that area lots of times before it normally shows up, so then thought prehaps it's something else. 

"say its a bait ball if your sounder top level is set at 0 m "  thats right, set it to bottom lock and it definately isn't connected to bottom.

From what you say it moves around and has decent fish around it - that could be a pack of squid.
Try a jig or something flashy or a smallish livebait, if its squid you should get a pull or two or a run if your using livebait.
Whatever it is you gotta find out what or your not learning.

Yeah it is strange.  There must be something there for the "bait" to keep hanging around, will try a squid jig or something next time im out there, funny how it is normally there.

Every sounder is different Dean but having owned a Navman, I'd say the beggining bit of ground had growth which means food/structure for bottom fish. I would of liked to see more pics ie just as you hit the ground, on the ground and then exiting the ground....that helps, PM me the pics and I'll let ya know if ya want. I'd say that's a school of fish with good fish mixed in....IMO

Using a bottom lock is the best tool for sure in defining ground and fish, if you dont have that then bottom zoom as Andy mentioned is another good option!

Yeah we have bottom lock ryan I will Pm you some pics next time where out on the ground, just started to fiddle round with the sounder.

There is areas of flat barren limestone that dont look like much on the sounder but are hollowed out beneath the seabed and honeycombed with caves. Divers I have spoken to have told me of small openings in the bottom revealing bus sized cavities full of crays,dhuies,grey nurse sharks or wobbies.
Your spot may be something like that. I have a small 30cm ledge that has produced many dhuies over the past 6 years so I suspect that has a cave system attached as no fish appear on the sounder.

The funny thing about ground is fish and crays need very little to hold them there. I've got a spot that produces heaps of dhufish where I got my PB 20kg on the Drift Baiting and most fish average 6-15kg. That spot has a 750mm small rise and a smallest amount of coral, even with my high powered commercial Furuno sounder I struggle to find it but it holds fish.

I do agree with Noha that some area's have bunker structure, I get heaps of crays out of such area's when I'm diving and there's always a harly/dhufish/blackarse/baldy etc hiding in and around it so yeh!

The boys put the baited cameras down last Saturday when the comp was on in a variety of different depths from 35m-70m.They were amazed to see a variety of fish but one thing that was common in every spot was millions of footballers.
For those who are not sure what they are ,they are small stripey yellow and white fish with a very small mouth who tend to get foul hooked.
There were a few baldies,sambos,red snapper and even a dhuie on one of the lumps.
What was funny was some of the ground that looked great on the sounder wasn't that special and some average looking ground on the sounder looked brilliant!Go figure!

Yeh fully agree Matt, some spots I fish you'd normally drive over and go pppffffff waist of time, but the place rocks with good fish when you drop so yeh spot on!

Hey Goat where abouts do you get these cameras from?  Are they black and white or colour?

Under the hammer - Pull a lot of dhuies from this spot and we ain't sharing! 

The ground is mostly flat, but generally has baitballs/small fish like shown on the sounder around, also there are small flares that come off the bottom but they are patchy over a 100mx100m area.
