Who says there aren't fish in close?

Had me worried after several good takes and I was still fishless. Though I was using lures too for a while (unsuccessfully I might add).

Cheers

Couldn't for the life of me

Couldn't for the life of me catch a fish on a jig yesterday, jigged for about 1 hour, then changed to bait and started catching.

Persistance pays

Mon, 2007-11-05 10:19

Kasey had jigged for over 5 hours straight when he pulled that 24kg dhuie in.

Unfortunately my excuse is I am old and frail (like Sherbert) and can't do it for too long.

I think Tim stuck with the jig for about 2 or 3 hours before drift baiting the rest of the day. I tried for maybe an hour and pulled the jig out every now and then when the sounder looked like we might get some interest.

Cheers

What size jigs rae you using Dean? I've been doing well on small baitfish profiles and in the last 2 years has accouted for many fish....big and small!

110g and 120g jigs, and i

Mon, 2007-11-05 11:18

110g and 120g jigs, and i tried just about everything, small twitches, yoyoing, long strokes, slow and fast nothing seemed to work.  Changed to a KG rig and straight away got blackarse, sweetlip, dhuie which busted me off, then put on a drift bait and got a dhuie.

Ryan Thipthorp's picture

mmhh okay!

Mon, 2007-11-05 11:30

Yeh 100 gram Zest is what i'm using. As for technique i'm mixing it up and often the dhufish in particular are well off the bottom before they hit the jigs. Are you getting any sergent bakers on jigs?

no, getting stuff all.

Mon, 2007-11-05 11:37

no, getting stuff all.  except the odd pink snapper and sambo's and little reef fish (wrasse, foxfish)

I am using river2sea searocks and another type, and i have tried working the jig near the bottom and also working it up 10-20m of the bottom and dropping it back down again.

mmhhhh

I'm getting a mixture but the grounds i fish (reef/coral mix) gets me plenty of sargy's on jigs (pain in the arhse) Dont know what to say Dean, sounds like you doing everything right and if you're moving around to all different spots then something should happen!

On one spot a while ago, my

Mon, 2007-11-05 11:51

On one spot a while ago, my dad had 5 sgt bakers on bait and I caught nothing.  Fished the spot for 20mins, and it was full of them.  Also tried spraying chumline on the jig and that didn't do anything.

Andy Mac's picture

That's the trick Ryan

Mon, 2007-11-05 11:59

Keep moving around.

We hit the "dropzone" for 4 drifts thinking we would hook up but I only had one big take and bust off on bait and that was it. We moved straight away.

Also, try the north western edge of a lump on a rising tide and the south eastern edge on a falling tide. The bigger fish tend to sit in the null point at the front of the lump, favouring the dart out to grab a passing fish and then not have to fight the current to get back to their spot.

One other bit of info from yesterday's trip was the length of the drift we did to nail the fish. Quite a few were on ground in between lumps, so we had some good success drifting across areas where I have several lumps in close proximity (say 100m between them).

Cheers

We drifted that one spot

Mon, 2007-11-05 12:21

We drifted that one spot andy where we get a lot of dhuies and there was loads of fish on the sounder, and another person who was on the boat dropped a big fish after about 30seconds and then the whole area just went quiet.

Jig

Mon, 2007-11-05 12:32

After all the jigging commotion I had a quick go this morning. First drop got absolutely smashed up by what I think was a good coral trout or coronation trout, just wouldn't let me get it off the bottom with full drag until piiing. After that it shut down and without bait on board that was the end of it. Might be going back to the tackle store this arvo to pick up a few more smaller jigs. Absolutely sensational day off Tantabiddi this morning.

yeh

Mon, 2007-11-05 12:46

Yeh on that note Andy re fish off the spot, i went inbetween 2 spots yesterday and suddenly over very baron sand came dense red clumps of fish....oohhh arhhhhh....quickly circled, drop my drift bait down and boom...schooling/sand pinkys

No it wasnt Honsu. That hook had heat shrink right down to the hook shank (ZEST pre rigged Jig). The rubber tube had been removed before we started. Didnt have the right sized Dyneema one to suit with me.
