Some more info for you. The

Wed, 2007-11-28 11:01

Some more info for you. The neap tides are 11/13th july full moon on the 18th. The neaps will be better for diving and I'm told the full moon is better for the offshore fishing. Can one of you northern locals confirm that? Creek crabbing is better on the bigger tides.
The Sun Chalets are a bit better appointed the the caravan park chalets but will cost more. They have the same twin bed and two singles but have seperate rooms and there own shower and toilet. $150/night for 3 people. Plenty of room for cars and boats. Located on the beach and has its own pool, just for your missus Tim

The caravan park chalets are only $75 for 3 people/night but have the twin and one end of the room and the bunks at the other. Ablutions are the common caravan parks one.

There is only a short stroll between the two so where you stay can be up to your own budjet and requirements. We will still be all together at the end of the day for a beer and barbie.

As discuused the is plenty of options here for any size boat and even if the wind is up there is still sheltered fishing to be found. If its really really bad you still can drive out to the national parks and play tourist.

Should be a good trip

Full moon

Wed, 2007-11-28 12:04

My experience with pelagics is that the full moon period itself is shite. The first quarter leading up to the full is my preferred time whenever i've planned trips north. However I haven't really noticed the full moon having much effect on the bottomies as I rarely bottom bash in the deep water. I imagine it might be a bit harder to hold the bottom on the bigger tides out wide.

Move with the tides

Wed, 2007-11-28 14:13

Fish move with the tides as well. You really need to try a lot of depth variations to find them sometimes, especially bottom bouncing. A lot of the time because the current is pumping in 20-30m people decide its not worth heading wider. You get out into the 70s and the water is hardly moving and kick yourself later for wasting valuable time when they're on the bite.

Confirm - Diving is better on the neaps and its better to dive on the second day of fine weather. Gives the sediment/particles time to settle to increase the visibility. Better to dive an hour before or after the turn of the tides from my experience where there is only 1/12 shift of the tide, which is the most minimal movement.

The lead up to the full moon provided good bottom fishing for us and some good surface days, except for our lack of billfish. :( Having said that, some big billies were landed by others. The sailfish competition up here in Exmouth was around the first quarter to half moon and was terrible for surface fishing. I think there was only 15-20 sailfish landed over the two days and a lot of boats not even turning a reel. (that is pretty dismal considering 3 boats landed that in one day a few weeks back)

I think the key to it all is. Get the boat in the water and go! :)

Cheers,
Adam

Thu, 2007-11-29 16:16

Checked the holiday roster at work and I need to be back at work 25/7. So with school hols being just before that are we now drifting back into late June/ beginning July.
You guys were originally looking at August so is too far forward for your plans. Some people might be wanting tax returns to fund this trip. Or have end of tax years paperwork to do and cant get this time.

If all those wanting to go can post a prefered time say end of June though to end of August a time can be booked that suits the majority it dosnt have to just suit me.

Always hard

Fri, 2007-11-30 19:45

Always hard trying to please lots of people Luke.

IMO go with the consensus formed at the get together. Its still six + months in advance so other interested people have time to get themselves organised. Book your own personal accomodation and if that means only two boats, so be it. At least your locked in then. If others are keen enough they'll find a way, at least that's what i've found in the past.

Go north mate, you won't regret it. In fact if your trips are anything like mine have been (even in a tinny) you'll find it hard to get motivated to go out local for a while after you return.

Jody's picture

Oi!! Nuff of that.

Sat, 2007-12-01 07:36

Luke, you are so close ATM. Just need to set the parameters to make it easier.
And we decided that the ones who went to the meeting would set them, with the others coming along if the final dates were good for them, as too hard any other way.

Therefore..............

Location - given costs / flexibility of fishing grounds with weather etc Onslow won easily.

The Accom is sussed - caravan park or 2 different chalets. Sound like we are all keen with the  pool & seperate room for a few extra bucks = Pool chalets. And if there isnt enough for everyone should we hopefully get heaps of takers, plenty left at the others, which is, like, over the road.

Dates - Hmmm, more parameters needed.

August - We will all go mad with it being that far away but possible
July school hols out = leaves a 10 days at the end of July which Noha can't make
June - possible (plus 4 days into July)
May - possible

Going to be easier if peoples can say when they can get time off as it seems quite a few work for themselves.

Holidays

Sat, 2007-12-01 09:46

Being a teacher myself, all of my July Exmouth trips have been restricted to the school holidays. Its supposedly busy but fishing from 6.00am to 6.00pm every day I never really noticed it.

The traffic on the Saturday morning is usually a bit heavy between here and Geraldton but after that its not a real drama. I usually avoid this by travelling up at night, but some people aren't comfortable doing this and that's fair enough. Alternatively a 4.00 am start can beat a lot of this traffic.

My Brother in law goes north 3 times a year, for years he went to Point Samson and Onslow. A couple of years back he started going to Exmouth and has never gone back to Onslow or Point Samson as he reckons the fishing out of Exmouth is heaps better. I have since found a few others who say the same thing.
Im sure that people out there will disagree but I thought I would share it with you all.

I havn't fish either places so I can't comment personally but it does get you wondering.

Wed, 2007-12-05 16:09

have heard similar things myself regarding onslow v exmouth....myself, i dont really mind...just want to organise a group of us to go up, and have a good time fishing. and i do agree, if we went to exmouth, having some "local ( are you considered a local now adam ;)  )knowledge" would be a benifit....at this stage ,  i will let the general concensus decide...but i will say, at this stage we need to decide where, when and who...and needs to be done soon...or we may not get a booking in time...especially if we go earlier..like april/may....

So

Wed, 2007-12-05 19:01

now Adam has stirred the pot, R we back to square 1? Where to go.... Personally I think driving to Exmouth is a long haul especially with a boat following you. 13 - 14 hours drive? I don't own a boat, but roughly that's how long. Really a trip away from the metro and getting into some fish , drinking, relaxing, stuffin' around etc is a great time to have regardless where or how far you travel up north. As I said I don't own a tub but whatever boat owners decide is fine with me as long as a time is set so people can organise time off work. And "local knowledge" can help right Adam? ..........Feel the force.........

March-June/July

Thu, 2007-12-06 10:43

March through to June is the best time. The earlier the better really as we had some pretty serious north easterlies this year that shut down the fishing on both sides of the cape around June. Gamex this year had 4 superb weather days and lots of good weather on its lead up, so I'd definately try to come in March or April.

The first two weeks of April I will be fishing religiously as my fisheries contract ends and Gully and the boys are coming up. If you can make it up around then, it will be fishing non stop until you drop.

7 days

Fri, 2007-12-07 08:05

7 days is pretty short, you should really look at 10 days minimum.

mitch's picture

i agree 7 days is to short

Fri, 2007-12-07 08:27

i agree 7 days is to short .as it takes a day or2 to get settled and get ya bearings.
its easy to sit here and say that .as im not the one orgainizing the trip which is a feat in itself.well done luke and crew.
LIFES TO SHORT bite the bullet guys and make it a ten out of ten trip .you wont regret it

always in it just the depth that varies

Onslow

Mon, 2007-12-10 20:15

Mackerel Island Motel in Onslow has the secure parking area for cars and trailers.

When i've overnighted in Carnarvon in the past I've just stayed in a chalet in one of the caravan parks. Never had any worries with the boat or car. Wintersun C P is a good one.
