Has anyone been off the Artificial reef in bunbury and caught anything

Over the yrs we have a few nicknames rather than the real names for certain fish hitting the deck.

Some we used Coral trout - Supreme, Red emporor - redjoy, Barracouda - axehandle, Spanish mack - razorback, Tuna other than YFT - torps, YFT - shashimi, Flathead lizard, NW blowie - master key or boltcutter, Chinaman -tractor. Blowies - Popper

Obviously some others but thought I would start few a few from our boat.

Im sure there are some funny one.

After enduring a pink drought over the last month (high winds, north winds, cold winds, too cold, dodgy tides, dodgy baits, dodgy rigs or anything else I can reasonably hope to blame) we finally had a reason to smile.

King George have been a target for a long time but to date we have had no success. I think we have just been fishing the wrong ground (on top of near shore reef) but recently a MAAC member took pity on us following my incessant winging and whining about no KGs, and no clue about where to go, and “released” a few spots a bit further out. I had to give a “vow of silence” that I would never disclose these locations to anyone and immediately delete any reference to their transmittal, and deny all knowledge of where they came from. It is awesome how fellow fishos will help you sometimes in your hour of need.

Anyway, great conditions yesterday and by early arvo I started to receive a “barrage” of text messages from YPM about going out to try the spots – after all it is school holidays. I changed some meetings (got to look after the young ones!) and managed to get away early and to the ramp by about 4pm. A quick trip out, sounding and selection of the spots and we were ready to go.

My limited KG knowledge is that we did ok on filleted pilchards down at Busselton at Christmas so why not give that a go? What do you know, first drop and a nice KG hit the deck. The next hour was “quality” as skippy, small pinks, small dhu and evil devil fish moved in. It was bite time big time and we certainly enjoyed the “pick the fish before you land it” banter along the way (everything except KGs went back). After numerous catches by him, YPM finally came out with “this is a KG” as he is bringing it to the boat. Guess what, he was right and of course it was bigger than the one I got – and didn’t he let me know about it, and all of the fish I had missed that bit like a KG. It got dark, the fish went away and we were celebrating a lovely little afternoon session in perfect winter conditions.

We had to come back past our old trusty pink spot on the way in. We couldn’t resist stopping and having a go as a big pink would have topped off the afternoon nicely. No sooner had I thrown out the weighted floater the bait runner started running. It certainly didn’t feel like a pink and when it broke the surface near the boat I was sure it wasn’t (it was dark and we couldn’t see). All of a sudden, this 2kg Bonito turned up in the net – I thought you could only get them in the warmer months?

To me, this was the catch of the month as I think they are the best bait I have ever used but you can’t seem to buy them in WA – I have even looked at importing them. There is a real technique in preserving the flesh but everything loves a fresh chunk, particularly the pinks and tailor. Hopefully we can convert blue to pink in the coming weeks.

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are about using pastenoster rigs with squid jigs. I was down at south mole the other day, using a deep diving squid jig which gave me moderate success with a few hook ups but after i snagged it on some rope and lost it, which dampened the day a bit, I had a chat with another bloke near me and he said that from time to time he uses a pasternoster rig with his squid jigs. Never really heard of this method before but he said that its good as it gets the jig down a bit quicker and ya can set the height of the jig off the rig so it just sits off the bottom.

Going on a 4 night live aboard charter in darwin with arafura in early october. There WAS ten of us locked in, but as normally happens two have pulled out. 

So two seats have become avaiable, i was just wondering if anyone on here would be interested.

These charters open up a huge area of remote territory fishing depending on weather, the time of year and tidal movement.

One the larger tides we head past the Perron Islands to the remote fish rich grounds near Cape Scott, Emu Reef & Cape Ford again home to Red emperor, golden snapper, Tricky snapper, jew fish, tusk fish, bar cheek coral trout to name just a few and with some trolling thrown in to give the arms a rest and the chance to tussle with some Spanish mackerel or land a trophy sail fish.                             For the truly adventurous fisho a long steam through the night some 170 nm will see you close to international waters. Fishing the remote Tassie, Evans or Flinders shoals, these trips are limited to the calmest times of the year and specific tides. The fishing is world class, with some of the finest table fish in abundance and some awe inspiring sports fishing as well. With exotic species like the powerful Dog tooth Tuna, the electric blue of the blue trevally and the chance to tackle with one of the oceans fastest fish, the impressive Wahoo, all this between the main game, chasing gold band snapper, small and large mouth Nannygai, red emperor, long nose emperor, coral trout, corination trout, trout cod and a myriad of other species never seen close to Darwin. On past trips we have had several encounters with sail fish and large Black Marlin. Again on the last morning tides permitting a stop at Cape Fourcroy on the way home for a Black Jew if your arms still work.

All tackle is provided however if you wish to bring along your own gear we suggest a minimum of 50 lb braid, a good jigging outfit and some Gulp soft plastics will add to the fun whilst drifting the shallower grounds and the trout love them.

We suggest that you have at least one night in Darwin on return from the trip, this will give our staff time to ensure your catch is properly frozen and allow us to pack it in an air line approved box. (The cost of the box is $15.00AUD and holds approx 10-12 kg+ of fillet.) This will be ready for collection on your way to the air port, at Top End Tackle World Stuart Highway Pinelands. Open 8.30am-6pm Monday- Friday. Saturday 8am-5pm and Sundays 8am-4pm. Please note: Tackle World Pinelands is 18km's from Darwin City and  15km's to the airport.

We helped when we were teenager some Pro Crayfisherman drag in their mullet nets of Avalon Beach and the 4 off us got offered to go out with them crayfishing. Still in those days used cow hides and hocks as bait. Aim was to leave from mandurah and pull the pots. 2 mates on each off 2 boats.

Now poor Dangerous Dave started feeling sick about 50m off the ramp, and by the time we cleared the heads he was ralphing over the side.

Obviously no mercy from the Cray boys and the 2 off them and myself could only giggle and feel sorry for him. Was not the most pleasant trip out there and with the odour of off bait made everything worst.

Now I dont often suffer, and lasted until we started back home but couldnt contain the berley anymore, so after 4hrs I ralphed.

BUT I have never seen anyone spewing on a boat after not even hiting the sea, and only about 10minutes into a four Hour trip.

Poor sod never came out on a boat again.

Any similar weak gut experiences?

 hey guys going to wageo next week anything decent up there atm. What should i be able to catch up there and what gear should i bring 

 Wondering if anyone can give me some advise on targeting Tailor on the reef breaks along Murray reef Mandurah to Warnbro. I have tried a couple of times trolling lures and casting surface lures and mulies but not come across any.  I usually target snapper at sunrise, and my Tailor attempts have been after this a little later in the morning (hour or so after sunrise).

when targeting Tailor land based I have always focused my efforts around the sunrise/sunset period. Is it worth targeting them on inshore reefs durin the day or am I wasting my time?

 Hi well with 7 months on the road my family and I are nearing darwin and wouldn't have a clue where to fish how to fish it or even what to target will be all land based and usually with my 2 girls so any advice on any or all of these would be greatly appreaciated.

 hi, today i went fishing with my mate lachieH (fishwrecked member) to the swan river trying for a few bream. lachie said to bring a heavier rod for some mulloway. so when we got there we setup and i cut up mullet pieces and bait and had a couple of bites. the lachie caught a under size bream. then we were trying for about 3 more hours but no luck untill i caught a undersize bream. i then put half a big mullet on the talica hoping for a mulloway then i casted it out and waited hours while me and lachie were fliking out lures. then my mum was about to pick us up so i wanted to prank her so i put a whole mullet on my little lure on my 6lb outfit and casted it 1m away so when my mum came i wanted her to think i caught it.  so i wated and wated but my mum was running late. so i put the fliky in the rod holder and went to see what my mate was catching 20m away. i then heard zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz i ran to the flicky and i striked the filky but then i relized i had just be spooled 120m clean of the spool. it took about 5 seconds to spool all the 6lb of the spool. 

would that of been a mulloway or a massive ray?

1. Finding a nice sheltered bay in the Dampier Archipelago just having fun popping for little fish and squidding due to a thunderstorm blow. Not another soul in site. Deckie gets an urgent mother nature number 2 call and hangs her butt clean over the edge. Suddenly a boat with the same find shelter idea comes idling around the headland to be faced by a full moon. Never seen a woman move so fast to cover up. I just about fell in the water laughing but it was nothing compared to the other boats bellows. Deckie never raised her head above floor level until they had moved off

2. Spinning whalers are fun to catch anytime. But when you have a 4ft green leaping snapping jaws jump into the boat with 4 people onboard, and see the outcome as bodies disappear in all directions to avoid the thrashing set of razor teeth, including 2 overboard I seriously had to hold on tight not to loose all bodily functions from laughing so hard. Manage to grab the shark, settle it, remove the hook and release all whilst in a uncontrollable fit of laughter.

Heaps of others that causes comedy but wondering what others have experienced that "cracks one up"?

How much do you think these ones are champ.

 Was thinking about maybe going to the Guildford area tomorrow probably around fish market reserve and was wondering if the recent rains might have affected the fishing. If not what could I expect to catch.

Well I am sure that you have worked by the pics now that we are not in Australia Fishing..

We have just got back home from 15 days in India and these photos were taken towards the southern end around Kochi and Allepy.

To say it was an eye opener to how they catch and store the fish is an understatement..

Below is a couple of photos as to the methods used, and the one that I couldnt beleive the little foam boat with home made paddle, where a bloke sits on the front of it and 250mtrs nett in a bundle behind him and then proceeds to paddle out between 3 to 5 kilometers to set it.. How they retreive this 250mtrs of nett from this piece of foam and keep it all together.. Who friggin knows as it wasnt a pretty day out on the water..

The other method is a Chinese method of a nett on a fixed pivot.. See photo.. They pull and reset this type of nett about every 5 minutes..

I'm keen to make my own assist hooks for demersal jigging. I like the Decoy Pike js3 however the 2/0 looks flimsy and the 3/0 appears too bulky? Does anyone have experience with with either and which do you prefer?

I currently have a charter booked with Blue Lightning Charters in the Montebello Islands in September (the 4th - 12th) heading out from Karratha. Unfortunately I have had one person unable to come due to work which means that there is a spot available to whoever gets in first! Please PM me or text me on 0407451156 for additional details but this is a great trip! Blue Lightning is one of the best in the business, we will be on their 55' Conquest for the trip and have access to their 26' Boston Whaler and a 40' Blackwatch is also available for hire for the game fishing.

The fishing will be a mix of GT fishing, a bit of jigging (depends on the sharks!) as well as soft plastics etc. Bait is available for those who want to do that as well. There will be 8 people coming, so plenty of room on the boats. We are all arriving on the 4th September in Karratha in the afternoon, on the boat first thing on the 5th and staying out until the 11th where we come back in and leave from Karratha on the 12th. This is a 7 day charter and the boys on board certainly know what they are doing and where to find the fish. You can bring your own gear, but there will be gear on board as well. BYO alcohol, but food and other drinks supplied.

 Hi guys I know it's a long shot..does anybody know where I can get a hold of any Nautiglass stickers ? 

I got the ok from the um wife to go fishing i guess because she wants to go to scrapbooking next weekend

Any way i got in the car and left around 3:30pm  got down there pulled out some gear i bought a siena 4000 and a torium 30 on a crank rod  and a pfluger conternder on a timber wolf not completely new but to me they where.

I took prawns down and 2 frozen herring i put 1 herring on .the pflugger reel only cost like $15 its a nice reel but i found out the clicker dont work .Anyway  i cast the herring out was out no linger than 10 minutes and the rod got pulled down almost out of the rod holder something hit it hard but didnt hook up.So i put a big bait on the torium and cast that out as well well 20 minutes later the pfluger reel was of and running there was a salmon on it what a sight my first salmon jumpingf out the water doing back flips got it all the way in to shore and i had to  cross over my other line thats where it got of right on the shore my falt gave it enough slack when lifting over the other rod that it got of i ended up with 4 herring used them for baits  no more big runs stayed there till about 8:15pm then went home..

i was spewing it got of but it got the hard pumping and blood flowing there was other slamon caught by other people 4kg salmon have been a few caught down there the last few weeks

In todays Sunday Times Paper ( page 23 news section ) there is an article about one of the unwanted side effects of changing the cray fishing process of the pro's to a quota system.

The article describes how the entanglement of whales in cray pot ropes etc. has increased significantly due to the pro's fishing over a 12 month period instead of a specified period.

This was something raised by the previous federal government some 8 - 12 months ago if my memory serves me correctly, and I believe that the then government issued veiled threats to the industry that it will have to come up with a solution from the stake holders or one will come from government sources, and we all can guess what sort of solution they will come up with. My guess is that what ever the solution is that is the pros come up with may be forced onto amateurs as well.

Now in my view considering the number of pots placed in the water by the pros as compared to the number used by armatures such a move would be way out of order, also as the Fisheries or whoever undertake the task of releasing the whales it would be easy for them to record if they have or are being ensnared by pro pots or armatures'.

Any comments from anyone about what could become an expensive thorn in the side for amateur cray fishermen

 Because it's the school holidays, I wanted to try fishing freshwater for the first time. I live in perth metro and am willing to travel for 1.5 hours at the most. Does anybody know any good Redfin spots? I have seen most minnows are good for Redfin and the odd trout.
