Saragosa 18000

Guys i'm in the market for new spin reel to do a bit of bottom bouncing/jigging with. While I would love a Stella or Saltiga can't warrant spending that much so I was looking at the Saragosa. Has anyone got one and given it a good workout? Also what else is there in that $4-500 range that would do the job. I've read a few people have got the Ryobis and are happy with them. Any other recommendations? Thanks.

fishoreub had a saragosa but i dont know the model. it handles nicely and feels really smooth. the ryobis seem a bit too much on the blingy side for a company that hasnt made good quality gear in the past. i have also heard that they are good but i myself wouldnt get one. buts again, its JMO

Geez which Ryobi have you

Fri, 2009-01-23 11:30

Geez which Ryobi have you seen?? Ryobi has been up there with Daiwa and Shimano in the past but have slowly died away and lost popularity.

The Penn Applause and Affinity were actually Ryobi's in Asia and Japan. They were badged Appluase and Zauber and have been out for around 6-8yrs. The Safaris themselves have been out alot longer than you think. It was only out of production for the last 4 yrs. Ryobi is not owned by somebody else, who I dunno, but they are now producing top notch products and more than just reels.

They should bring back the Marfix lever drag overhead jigging reel. They were great back then.

The old safaris were rated as quite good, and the new ones are supposed to be the same. Just because they arent painted, doesnt make them bling :p

when they first released the ryobi

Mon, 2009-01-19 21:02

it was made in Japan and cost over $1000. Its was the "must have" reel for jiggers in the early days of the sport.

They are now made in China, but I believe they are every bit as good as they once were. So comparitively speaking, $300 - $400 for them is good value.

Your choice (IMO) will come down to line class - the Ryobi will suit 50lb max, while the Saragosa 18000 will handle 65 - 80lb.

Saragosas

Thu, 2009-01-22 07:16

Mate I started with a 5000 because I needed a good spin outfit here in Karratha.

Was convinced by the tackle shop that it was the model below Stella and I thought what the hell. It is fantastic and now I have 4, but not the 18000. I have the the 6000, 8000 and 14000 and have not had anything challenge the big 14000 so I have not gone to the 18000. Lets face it they arent the cheapist reel, and me splurging on 4 in less than 6 months tells more than all else I can say. Smoooth but sometimes with the bail arm open you get a stick trying to close it with the handle. only at certain points. hope this helps.

You shouldnt be closing the bail arm with winding the reel as that would wear out the bail trip. Best to close the bail manually, it'll last longer and your hand is closer to the line for control.

Got one

Thu, 2009-01-22 18:51

I only had my 18000 for a few weeks, I have pulled up my 300/400 gram jigs with ease nice and smooth, bottom bounced with it & pulled up a few dhuey with it, the more i use this reel the more I like it. 37kg Black Magic on the spool with the depth markings on it.

I am hangin out to get on some Sambo and gve it a good test. next trip up north I will be chucking Poppers at GTs with it, I am more thatn confident this weapon will more than do the job. It has served me well so far.

You should go down to Ryan or Honsu and grab one, you wont regret it..

Thu, 2009-01-22 21:40

The new Twinpowers are not that big....Shimano Japan will introduce the new SW Twinpowers in the larger sizes later in the year.

In the meantime...the Saragosa is your best bet for an affordable large heavy duty spinning reel.

Interesting

Thu, 2009-01-22 21:54

Those larger twinpowers sound interesting Honsu. I'm fishing a lot with an 8000 pg at the moment but it only holds about 280 metres of PE5.

Are the saragosa's based on the stella chassis as well?

Thu, 2009-01-22 22:46

No...you cannot compare the Saragosa to the Stella.
2 completely different reels. The Saragosa is based on the popular Spheros but due to people wanting to "mod" and "beef" them up. They decided to produce a more upmarket model with all the extra bits. Looks good but they still missed one bit...right side of the main gear is still supported with a bushing. The extra bearings are in the Septon knob!! What a waste. Therefore if I were you I save the money and get a Spheros. Use it till its worn then fix it!!

Ask Adam G about his Spheros. How long has he used his until he did anything to it??

No info at all about the new 09 SW Twinpowers....just a Shimano Tech in Singapore told me they'll replacing the old Twinpower PG/HGs with the old FA chassis and new gears to go.

My spheros 14000

Thu, 2009-01-22 22:54

has taken a beating and still runs like a champ. Best $350 odd I have spent for a strong SW reel that can "do it all" - jig, pop, troll, bottom bounce. You can keep your Saragosa, over-priced for what you get IMO when you can buy a spheros and tweak it up to and beyond Saragosa specs for less $.

Spheros V Saragosa

Fri, 2009-01-23 12:40

I agree with Honsu, both are good reels but for value the New Spheros is the go.In saying that, we do stock both and let the client choose after giving them the "in & out"

saragosa too overpriced for the quality, you could get something like a stradic or spheros and a rod for the same price.
