2 combo units or 1 combo and 2 standalone units

 G’day all

I would really appreciate some recommendations on some of my queries below.

The new boat I am looking at includes a LOWRANCE HDS 7 combo unit with a 600W transducer. I am also looking at adding another sounder (with a 1kw transducer) and chartplotter (for redundancy) or combo unit. Currently I’m leaning towards the FURUNO 587 (I’m not sure of what transducer yet, preferably mounted in hull) and I am unsure of what chartplotter. If I went for another combo unit I was looking at the LOWRANCE HDS 8 combo unit.

Any recommendations or opinions would be appreciated.

Cheers

Its it primarily for sounding i think the best option is the 587! I kick myself sometimes for not getting one.

Sure a combo is always a good back up, but lowrance are not in the same league as Furuno!

Personally i have 2 combo units (Raymarine E7D and Raymarine Dragonfly)

Personally I would go two combos but I agree with Vinesh the Furuno apparently offers better capability than the Lowrance combo. Having said that I understand that the Koden CVS128 which again apparently performs at the same level as the Furuno has the ability to connect a GPS attenae. You dont get full whizz bang capability but at a pinch if your main unit snuffs it you have something other than your Compass !

Perhaps anyone who has a Koden can comment ?

cheers

Would go for the furno with 1kw tran, and grab a cheapy gps for backup.

If you can get a cheap GPS that will take the card from your Lowrance then even better

I've decided to go with the Lowrance HDS7 with the 600w tm transducer, a Lowrance elite 5m and the Furuno 587 with a 1kw transducer. On that note I'm wondering which 1kw trany to run with, (an in hull or through hull) as there is som many options. I know there are only certain transducers that will use the bottom discrimation function, but does anyone even use this????

Cheers

if you can go through hull then that is the best option for any of the Furuno sounders. As you have eluded, there's a heap of 1kW transducer mounting options and styles to choose from so it boils down to type of hull (ally/glass) space inside hull, area under boat, trailer rollers etc
