2 more sleeps but I couldn't wait, so I went south

Not long now for west coast. Added some squid skirts.... Will see how they go! Doubt it will make a difference. And the result from 3 sharks having fun! Added a couple more sinkers off to the tip tomorrow to scavenge for more

 Haha floats are for dads

Wed, 2015-12-09 13:54

Haha floats are for dads drop lines I don't use them! But hooks are mine, and I'm just straightening some 500lb leader for when the ban lifts, may as well make them now. Just wish that black magic 500lb came in coils and not little 20m rolls. Almost need to pull it with the ute to straighten it. Don't worry only 3 hooks per rig! But sharks just hammer them sometimes and I end up going through 4-5 rigs some trips

Leader / trace material

Wed, 2015-12-09 18:00

Bryce see attached link.  Moimoi leader is available in bulk spools or coils if you wanted an alternative to Black Magic.  After a brief search of the web I found other brands can also be purchased in bulk spools or coils.

Moimoi mono

imo is well regarded within gamefishing fraternity as a good leader.  I have used it in that capacity and also for the backbone of deep drop rigs / traces without hassles.

Snooded up the hooks to see if it will stop from dropping fish 1/2 way up

Not that you seem to need any help deep dropping but I have read on another forum that slowing the retrieve speed lessens the numbers of dropped fish on the way up.  This was recommended particularly in winch situations which often have little shock absorbing components within the system.  I imagine a faster retrieve could result in the hook tearing an opening and then if they is any slack or change in momentum in the retrieve the hook simply falls out.

The concept of snooded circle hooks is an interesting one.  I would have thought that one circle hook would prevent the other from working in the manner in which it was designed (as in rotating and setting in the corner of the jaw).  Be interesting to hear how you find them.  Another alternative could be one circle and one J hook.

 Yeah I've been looking into

Sat, 2015-12-12 14:52

Yeah I've been looking into it, most times both hooks are in fish when they hit the top. Maybe the main reason is when they first hook up and are fighting each other on the bottom the hooks are pulling a bit! The speed at which they come up will have something to do with it as well. I had a couple of snoozed ones on before and never had any enlongated holes in mouth! Will post a couple of pics to prove my theory, plus snoods fit a whole Mack/large squid a bit better

 Had some squeezer motor

Mon, 2015-12-14 18:57

Had some squeezer motor right past us today maybe 20m off our port side mark our spot then went up 30m and start a drift, we had only just found the fish by chance as we were going between marks, I was quite amazed and would have been right pissed off. However we only managed to pull up 3 sambos and 2 spur dogs. so we hung around to see what he hauled up and had a chuckle when we saw him lift 3 sharks over the side.

You should have just nailed him with a sinker.

Great work on the deep fish again, how good is the size on those nannys.  I suppose that upgraded trannys did there job?  One more sleep!
