3 way swivels or dropper loops

Anyone ever test the catch rate comparing the two different bottom rigs?

Swivels

Always used 3 way swivels, but the advantage to dropper loops is you don't get the line twist like you do with 3 ways. Generally my 3 way leaders are a lot longer than my dropper loops and when theres a strong current the 3 ways cause the leader to wrap up/down the line causing tangles. Really depends on the conditions as to which I use.

Twisted Dropper Loops for me

Thu, 2007-11-08 13:03

Much faster to tie, bait sits better as the twist develops a bit more rigidity in the line making the bait sit proud of the main paternoster allowing attractors to be threaded on easily, and it certainly catches fish.

Only place I have a three way swivel is on the bottom of the rig if I want to use a trailing bait as per my "by-catch" rig explained in this months FWA article.

Shogun 3 way swivels

Thu, 2007-11-08 15:24

Shows how little I know about tackle, as Tim politely pointed out to me on Sunday that I was using them upside down.

They still did the trick but I must start reading the backs of these packets to work out how to use them properly before any more embarassing situations occur.

Bugger, Bugger, Bugger - Inferred the Skipper was doing something wrong. More Deckie Points Gone. Was just trying to be a helpfull deckie Andy.

They go with the second swivel on top of the barrel of the main swivel. Hope that makes sence to you.

120lb

120lb jinkai so that should have been heavy enough. Schneiders better anyway.

Penn 10x

Thu, 2007-11-08 18:02

I like Jinkai for a wind on leader and also for rigging up north where I use much smaller hooks, but in metro waters I use Penn 10x as for me it has the right combination of stiffness and knotability to creat the best paternosters. I use either 100lb or 120lb usually. Not tried the schneider line, but willing to give it a crack if you think it is a better material.

geez!

Thu, 2007-11-08 19:51

Geez Tim, you breakin 120lb Jinkai...that's what i use and no probs.....you tangling with bigger fish eh I must admit the Schneider is a good stiff cheap line, quite popular but i prefer a more supple trace but in saying that the new Jinkai Plus is better/slightly harder than the standard so i'm moving over to that now!

Twist

Thu, 2007-11-08 22:22

Ive used em on 200lb leader. They are OK but found they twist more than the 3 Ways in deep water.

scissor snap!

Fri, 2007-11-09 08:34

Yo Tim,

Was your fish scissoring ie double header of two descent fish then the 120lb Jinkai snapping at the loop knot?

I'd had that problem with my 80 and 100 lb Jinkai about ten years ago now....... the 120lb has eliminated that!

Could Be

Fri, 2007-11-09 08:42

Not sure as I wasnt down 90m too see what was on my line but it was when dropping on Schooling Dhuies. Could have been a bigun or double header.

I just prefer 3 ways now anyway as its easy to replace droppers if they get too frayed or bitten off. Also dont have to worry about not being able to feed line through a small hook eye either.

Hi Ya, Do any of you guys

Fri, 2007-11-09 18:38

Hi Ya,

Do any of you guys cut the loop to a single once the dropper is tied?  If so, what effect has it had other than to make it easier to put the hooks on?

Cheers.

have done yes!

Fri, 2007-11-09 18:41

I have no issue Ody in getting 120lb Jinkai through my 6/0 hooks, just need to pinch it a bit. Yeh i've tied the loop before and cut but found that did nothing and prefered the reliability of 2 strands especially with the Dhu's raspy teeth!

Tried it too

Fri, 2007-11-09 19:44

Same as Ryan, cut droppers with single strand don't hold up as much as the doubles imo.

Try the twisted droppers Ody, they stand out further so less tangles.

Jinkai is better at going through the smaller hook eyes than 10x, but it is less stiff so the twisted droppers droop rather than stand out at right angles.

Three way by far

Fri, 2007-11-09 20:26

Used dropper loops for a good part of my fishing career lost toooo many fish three ways are the way to go if your using dropper loops you  obviously dont mind losing fish your losing 50% through your dropper loops

50% diji?

Fri, 2007-11-09 20:37

I'd say in my experience its only been 10% at the most unless I am fishing the "dropzone" in which case its 80%

But the 80% is irrespective of dropper loops, three ways, or anything else you want to throw at them. Some nasty fish on that lump.

Sorry Diji

Fri, 2007-11-09 21:12

I like my way. But each to their own.

Maybe the need for stronger linkages is reduced by using a softer hand approach, which is I think the reason I land more than I lose these days. I used to be a gung ho yank em in as fast as I could angler but learnt over the years that a softer approach wins more battles. This tactic also reduces the stress on your rig and allows you to fish lighter. I run 20lb on several outfits and 30lb on the workhorse.

Besides I hate tying knots so tying 6 knots per rig (assuming a figure of eight knot at the top and bottom otherwise 8 knots), versus no knots  with the twisted droppers , its a no brainer for me.

True diji

Fri, 2007-11-09 21:58

I might have to resort to some heavier rigs myself with three way swivels and tied droppers if I am ever going to get one of those monsters up off the bottom at the "dropzone". So far everything I and everyone else on the boat throws at them gets pinged pretty quickly.

I have a sneaky suspicion there might be a big 30kg plus Blue Groper down there with a ship load of piercings (hooks) in its gob.

That's my tackle testing graveyard! I'll give the three ways a go and if I land him/her then I owe you a couple of beers mate.

Actually we are going to dive it and film the area one day soon, so if there is one of those suckers down there .....woo hoo, I'll be dusting off "big bertha" (heavy rod & reel combo) and having a serious crack at it!

Made up a few rigs

Sat, 2007-11-10 16:34

Made up a few rigs yesterday and It took me about 30 mins to do a full rig with 3 dropper loops, so went back to the 3 way swivels, anyone know of an easy dropper loop as the one I was doing in a book had twists and turns everywhere.

quick!

Sat, 2007-11-10 16:44

My way of doing 3 dropper loops is very quick, approx 3 minutes to make the rig then add all the stuff on (approx 5 min). I dont do the twisted dropper as i found it made no difference for me and the water pressure drags out the droppers so it stand proud/out.

Happy to show ya mate, just need to catch up. That new reel is here also so maybe a good time to do both?!?

just had a quick read

Sat, 2007-11-10 16:44

just had a quick read through this thread, only really do a bit of bottom bashing in the winter months, i prefer the dropper loop.  I got a couple of good easy knots out of the good ol trusty geoff wilson handbook a few years back.  They have never let me down and are very quick and easy to tie.  Also IMO just one piece of terminal tackle less i dont need to buy (three way swivels)

Sat, 2007-11-10 16:58

Ryan, Trying to find the time is the problem, i'll be down in a couple of weeks hopefully got exams and stuff to do at the moment.  If you are ever up my way (joondalup) I can catch up with ya somewhere or you could pop over if you had time?  Sent you a PM regarding reels.

Yeah I had no clue what i was doing with that knot, had screwdrivers and crap trying to hold it in place as the diagram showed, very confusing.  Seen one guy knock a rig out in about 1 min on west coast angling club boat, very fast.
