31m dive

Well we finally did a deeper dive. Our deepest to date was 25.6m which was quite a boring dive .This time we planned to do a dive on a lump I have fished for many years, just a mound of red on the sounder. iTS AMAZING WHAT IS DOWN THERE. I was first in the water hanging on the float out the back looking down to see sambos and ytks all coming up under the boat, must have been 20 all around 5-8kg. After the others got in the water we started our descent down the anchor rope. Wasn't long and a picture of coral and fish opened up in front of us, this red blob was four small lumps over a 250sqm all covered in plate coral and caves and cracks.  fish life abounds at these lumps, the plate coral great hiding spots for some large crays some up to 3-4kg big jumbos but out of reach of the loop. did get one around 1.5kg, Kev got a nice baldie around 3kg.  too many fish to list but no dhuies. We hit 31m and bottom time was 31minutes ,with a four minute stop at 3m. Viz was 10-12m . We were stocked and will do many more dives in the deeper water slowly but surely working through the lumps and patches in the gps

You're doing well on them crayfish, must be good to see what's actually on the lumps that you fish.

Drove along the coast this morning it looked good out there.

Yes a great morning,I always thought I had a good idea of what was on some of these lumps looking out the sounder.no chance and you can guess but it is so different to what pics you have in your mind.dosen't matter how much you spend on your sounder ,unless it is a underwater camera .

Very Nice!

Sun, 2010-03-07 18:44

That sounds like an awesome dive.  I was just thinking yesterday while we were fishing, how good it would be to dive these spots and have a look around.  I haven't dived for about 6 years now and wouldn't be confident going any deeper than 20m anyway.  We were in about 42m and we caught dhuies, baldies, pinkies, black arse and my mate has caught KGs and queenies and other fish in the same spot.  Doesn't look like much on the sounder though.

I'm still guessing as to what structure it is that I'm fishing at times, there is no substitute for a "human fish finder"

Jesse has had his dive

Sun, 2010-03-07 19:22

Jesse has had his dive ticket 15 month now he is nearly 14.he has 56 dives in depth from 5 -31m and is relaxed at any depth he uses less air than me.he has done many dives in the 20-24 on the three mile.he is keen to get all his tickets but until he is 16 they won't let him sit his next ticket ,he will be nearing 200 dives by then. Can't wait to get in the waterin exmouth this year.

See what you mean about all the plate coral down there..... and yeah, pity it can only be 30 mins.

I've heard the crays start to get a bit tough when huge ??

Great stuff Paul and good

Mon, 2010-03-08 08:52

Great stuff Paul and good experience for Jesse.  No hurry for more tickets, as dive experience is the best form of ticket.  I had about 600 done before I got my advanced (ran half the class......but that was many moons ago).

Cheers Pete
