8 meter Bill Plug/Oceanic, chasing info

Does anyone on here have a Bill Plug/Oceanic 8 meter or thereabouts, especially twin?
Chasing a bit of info on axle placement for my trailer build?

While I'm no expert on such matters, I found it much easier to have the axles mounted to a separate frame so that it was movable to get the balance right even if you modify or load it differently.

Thats how I did last one with roller rockers, this time Ive gone with 2500kg Transtyle and SS brakes etc so moving them is not as easy as loosening a couple of clamps

I would get the trailer builder to decide on the right spot for the axle to cover any prob if it goes tits up and needs to be covered by warranty.
But let him know that you would like a adjustable one fitted.

Long trips where the boat (fully loaded)weigh's a lot more and will tow diff.
More weight on the ball will tow better remembering not to exceed regulations.

I'm the builder.

Mon, 2021-01-18 16:40

 Cheers guys, Im the builder.

I've built a few before, but this ally trailer will be a little different and I'd rather get the axles within cooee so it can be adjusted with the post, than drilling new holes all over the place.

Only way to do that without outboards is compare to another similar boat.

Scubafish, generally boats should be set up so the consumables are roughly centred on the centre of bouyancy and similarly the axles, so the only bits that should change the download is poorly packed gear.

And you wouldnt be unbolting the axles and moving them because the tub of 2kg deep drop sinkers are at the wrong end of the boat

Just my advice , as as I know first hand what a badly Poisoned axle feels like at 110 km/hr down the hwy on the way to a fishing holiday.
My twitching ass will never forget.

 and appreciated as well!

Should avoid 110 though while towing haha.

Problem is that even a trailer manufacturer can't do anymore than guess without the actual boat ready to go outboards and all.

Yeah, looking for something a little more knockabout than the Cruisecraft.

Bouncing over the shallows saves you many miles at the Southern Group but is harsh on gelcoat.

Also just one fender slip on a rough night against a railway iron jetty and theres another gouge...

Who knows, I may hate it haha!

Do you sleep on the boat

Mon, 2021-01-18 21:08

Do you sleep on the boat while over there? Drives me crazy with the slapping on the hull with an ali, some nights it's like sleeping in a 44 gallon drum with some beating the side all night :) Don't know if a foam filled hull would help with that.

 I've slept on many ally

Tue, 2021-01-19 05:19

I've slept on many ally boats before, even cray boats are the same noise wise.

Someone told me the idea is to get 4 pool noodles, thread rope thru the middle drop it around the bow and tie to the shoulders.

I have a meter of EPE50 foam to alleviate it a little in the front of the boat.

I think my boys might get a surprise though.

I slept on deck on my last crayboat.

Tue, 2021-01-19 09:14

50ft ali. Had ali crayboats for 20-odd years, never really  got used to the slamming when we were anchored out. Not so bad if you were inside somewhere like South Passage. Gave it up with the Lady Laurel, swag across the deck under the canopy.

So you are going a non-load sharing axle setup? Assume because it is rubber torsion?

I humped craypots on the Lady Laurel for a couple of days when it was Jack Hartleys and Brett Thomas was driving it.

Yeah non load share, Transtyle with 12" SS Kodiaks

I would have saved up the 15c we saved on our rego a year, but our beauracrats forgot to pass that on.

Think it went to the boat owning government workers who "haven't paid for petrol in 11 years"

Haha, good ol' Rob, straight for the jugular. Make that 13 years without paying for diesel fuel come March but I've never worked for the State Govt and have to buy my own unleaded.

Boat build looks like a ripper. I saw your boat pop up on FB and wished I had the coin to snare it knowing it would have been up there with the best maintained 2nd hand boats around.
