trailcraft

I have a 5.1 Freestyle. Have had for 11 years. Great simple and pretty bullet proof boat. Good value for money and can launch myself, and easy to tow. Some may complain about the ride while sipping their Chardonnay in their hush puppies, but it's horses for courses. In 11 years I have not needed to spend much on maintenance at all. You do need to pick the day for comfort if that worries you, but I have come back from Rotto or through the South passage at Coral bay in some terrible conditions and never felt unsafe. Have done that in a variety of boats all my life so don't tackle those without the right prep and experience. Flat entry does bang a bit, but also reduces chances of broaching in a following sea.

Have fished 30km out of Coral Bay, Jurien and Perth. Set and pulled 4 pots near west end no worries. Caught Macks over 30kg at Coral Bay. Reds over 10 and plenty of crays. Great dive boat. More than 2 gets a bit crowded though. I have fold down rocket launcher style rod holder that is quite high and full clears up to that. Zip it up and can keep dry in pretty much anything. I would recommend getting one of those fitted if you look at one. Same as duel batteries.

Some annoying traits is that it swings around a lot while at anchor. Seems more so than other boats. I generally drift, but anchoring is a pain in the ass.

the hull inspection hatch on the stern deck is plastic. Always worries me that a foot could punch through it and she would fill pretty quick if heavy at the stern.

Electrolysis is causing the paint to bubble around most fittings after 10 years.

good luck!

solid stable boats that will tell you when you are pushing the limits by shaking your bones.

Have taken a 5.7 Trailcraft to the Abrolhos many times, and some rough rides home.

For what you want, more than enough, depending on the outboard...

Same as Chop Chop, I have a Trailcraft 5.7 sports cab. All his comments are valid.

I will say that I love my boat. I regularly go deep dropping with it, 35nm out, and have never felt worried. Yeh, you might be a bit sore the next day, but what doesn't kill you right?

One day we did 96nm out of Exxy and used 80 odd liters of juice. Pretty good.

Can fish 3 no problems on the drift too, plus I can launch solo easy as.

Maybe look at a slightly bigger size than 5.1 as it will open up many more options.

Will be OK, mines a 115HP. Could use a few more horses sometimes when loaded up with a bit of current running.

90 is good. I have a 75 and can do 32kn flat out on flat water with a couple of people. 90 would be nice with more people or gear to get out of a hole.

I was in the exact same

Fri, 2017-02-10 13:24

I was in the exact same position as you two years ago and was looking at the 5m Trailcraft because I was worried about damaging a glass boat. Ended up getting a 5m very well built glass boat (Seafarer) and haven't regretted going glass one bit since as she just glides through the chop and is nice and stable at rest which is great for my three very young kids. Took her 14nm off Mindarie in a 12kn NE and 1.7m swell one morning sitting on about 22kn and it was a big bumpy when you hit swell and then chop but never felt unsafe.

On the drift in a 5m boat two is best and can fish three ok but we generally have the third over the opposite back corner for comfort. If you can go bigger always go bigger and I'll be upgrading to a 6m or so when my young kids are a bit older and bigger.

Trailcraft...

Fri, 2017-02-10 12:29

Are good.  I've got a 570 Trailblazer, 135 Honda 4S on the back.  Perfect for fishing, diving and general fun ....powered right to,handles any decent sea/situation.   Run to/from Rotto is fantastic on fuel etc.   Easy to launch, maintain, handle etc.  You won't go wrong with a trailcraft but like all Ali boats, it will keep your bones and ligaments supple in a decent chop.    A good safe boat and that's what counts

trailcraft

At some stage in the last 5-10 years they switched manufacturing to China. Does anyone know of a decrease in build quality?

 I have a 5.3m trailcraft

Fri, 2017-02-10 19:01

I have a 5.3m trailcraft runabout and regularly fish 16mile. I have come back in a 20kn S/w and would not recommend it but doable.I highly recommend you get the rocketlauncher and clears as I get soaked with the little fold down bimini. Solid no fuss boat, heaps of deck space and I fish 3ppl. 90hp on mine and it's a good match good luck

Good choice

Fri, 2017-02-10 19:23

I think you have picked a winner in the selection you have made. A mate of mine has one fitted with a 115 Yamaha and he can really fly home when we go out for a deep drop. You should be able to launch and retrieve solo without any bother just work out a routine to do it.
Enjoy your time on the water.

Yep good choice

Tue, 2017-02-14 10:02

I have a 5.35m Profish (Side console) and has an excellent amount of deck space. I have a 75HP Mariner on the back which is a little underpowered. Flat out I get 27-28 knotts but fast enough I guess. Yes it does bang in a decent chop but when there's fish, crabs, crays in the esky, this banging isn't a problem at all. ;-)    You do get drenched if the weather is rough though.

My neighbour has just bought a brand new 6.1m trailcraft ($70,000) and they are terribly dissapointed with the build quality. Theres scratches on the windscreen, the welds are poor and there is a ding in the side of the hull. They approached the boat yard manager and he apparently doesn't want to know about it so my neighbours are taking legal action. Will be interesting to see how it all pans out. Their brand new boat has been sitting in the driveway for 5 months and has never been used!

Chop Chop - After seeing my neighbours boat I can say yes the build quality is poor now trailcraft are made in China.

Thats bad news

Tue, 2017-02-14 19:28

That's not good news about trail craft boats, when you pay brand new prices you have every expectation of getting a brand new un marked un dented product, full stop!
I think if your neighbour has a talk with consumer affairs he will find that they have the same line of thinking.
If you are retailing a product then you are responsible for that product, you accepted it from the manufacturer then on sold it. Your responsible for the condition it is in when the customer picks it up.
