Perhaps every 10 meters splice a few turns of different coloured small rope around the anchor rope.

cheers Rob

Electrical tape

Tue, 2012-09-18 21:25

I have done the same and used electrical tape at 10m intervals and it has been a big help to id how deep water vs how much anchor rope to put out for a secure hold on rock and sand.  Hope this helps .

Spray paint a mark every 5m.

Spray paint a mark every 5m. Has stayed on for 3 years now. Though it has faded considerably i can still make it out.

If it lastest that long then

If it lastest that long then yearly touch up should keep it clear? There's a spray paint called vinyl dye which dyes plastic instead of coating it. Haven't used it on nylon or in a marine environment but I wonder how it would hold up to the salt.

Though the good thing with splices or tape is you can feel it by hand though.

Yeah probably a yearly touch

Yeah probably a yearly touch up would keep it looking bright. But in all honestly i dont really anchor fish, or anchor at all anymore, so it barely gets a setting out anymore. Good point about being able to feel the splices or tape.

I actually did it originally so that when my deckies(or missus hahahaha) was setting or retrieveing the anchor line i could tell them to count the marks to know how much to let out, or how much was still down. Bit easier telling them to 'let out two marks' instead of them trying to guess when i tell them let out 10m. My deckies are much happier i drift fish almost exclusively now :)

anchor rope

Wed, 2012-09-19 07:26

I have some bright coloured material at 10 mtr intervals, but have 1 piece for 10 mtrs, 2 pieces (about 20 cms apart) at 20 metres, 3 pieces at 30 metres etc, so if I happen to miss one, or lose count, I can see with the next one how much is there... (I have electric anchor winch, so there is the chance to miss one if I'm watching other things at the same time as anchoring)...

I don't anchor very often, so the material has lasted well.

I have the white nylon anchor

Wed, 2012-09-19 11:44

I have the white nylon anchor rope, black texta (permanent marker) works for me as above one mark at 10m 2 at 20m etc.  needs redoing after two + years but quick and simple to do (have to re do mine after losing 8m anyway)

Cheers

Why?

Wed, 2012-09-19 16:20

Why would you want to put markers on your rope?

You already know how deep the water is and everything after that is by need or feel, if the anchor is dragging , you need to let more out and if you feel that its jerking or you are not far enough back to your spot again more rope is needed.

If you need to measure it while out there, one full span equals around 6 foot or 1.8 metres or thereabouts.

Sometimes helps when you have

Sometimes helps when you have an inexperienced deckie up the front setting or retrieveing the anchor. E.g i tell them to let it to the bottom then let out an extra say 30m. And they just guess 30m and end up letting out say 15m and the anchor starts to drag. Easier just to tell them 6 marks(have them every 5m on my rope). Or likewise when anchor is snagged and am going to tie the rope to the bollard and pull it off, again easier to tell them let out so many marks than let out so many meters. At least that way i know exactly how much is out, not the estimation of how much is out.

With my experienced deckies though they generally know what they are doing up the front, so not as much a need for the marks.
