Anchor winch problems
Submitted by crano on Mon, 2016-09-12 17:05
My young bloke has put a Muir freefall winch on his boat with a Delta anchor and has a couple of problems with the setup that I am sure can be sorted with assistance from members.
The first thing is the anchor does not fall off properly. It goes about 150mm to about the D in the name and stops. We could probably tie a sinker on it to make it tip in but there may be a better solution. The chain is loose and not holding it back.
The other thing is when retrieving the anchor alot of the time the anchor is facing the wrong way and you have to manually turn it around otherwise it would come in up side down.
Any help appreciated.

Has got a swivel. Twisting
Has got a swivel. Twisting is not the problem just the anchor facing the wrong way.
Thanks

easy fix
may be just to weld a piece of galv rod across that 'v' belo the 'd' in the name. might be enough to push the C of G forward and help it drop.
Wont do anything for strength, jus balance.

Go to a sarca anchor should
Go to a sarca anchor should solve both problems as the sarca has a straight shaft..and seems to always roll around the right way up against the bow roller

I don't know if it really
I don't know if it really helps, but, I had always heard that you were supposed to use both holes on those plough anchors, as in use a shackle on the end of your chain to the front hole near the nose, and then use some form of weaker restraint to hold the chain down at the back hole. That way under normal operation you can retrieve the anchor like normal, pulling at 0 degrees to the shank, but in the event of a stuck anchor, you start driving around in circles, pulling at right angles to the weak restraint, breaking it, and making it so that you pull from the hole near the pick. Possibly if you did this, you might have enough weight along the spine of your anchor to cause it to drop upon release (though, it wouldn't be a massive change in the centre of mass, so it may have no effect).
I doubt this would help too much with your roll position during retrieve, though.

Delta
Crano , I am pretty sure that the Delta is designed to slide up into the bow spit in a slot. Friend has one on his 47ft boat. The anchor tucks up under the bow not like yours where it is on the top.

Looks like your bowsprit is the problem
You need a different type, one which will it fall completely away. Look at the shape of the delta shank. When released, it will initially slide down the first angle, then the second lesser angle, but doesn't have the impetus to keep it moving and pulling the chain out--even a freefall has a certain amount of inertia to overcome in the system. Have a look at some different types of bowsprit, including the hinged types, and you'll work it out. The anchor needs to be sliding down and away, not just out.
Last poster may be onto itwith regards to the self positioning issue on retrieve--Sarcas will always ( apparently) come up the right way due to the sliding slot arrangement and their balance points. Delta may need a different kind of bowsprit arrangement altogether? Sarca may solve that problem.

Rmar is onto it.
You need the type of fairlead that has 2 rollers on the front.
Prob a bit hard to see on mine but the bolt is the pivot and inside it rocks, roller at each of those corners
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

As i stated above sarca will overcome both issues. I can power out my anchor on an upward hill (my driveway) no problems. That bow roller should be ok i would have thought

Rolling
I noticed the width of the bowsprit roller will not allow the anchor to roll once the anchor has entered it. should the anchor be the right way around before it enters the roller or should it be able to roll over the right way after it enters the roller ?
Thanks for all the input.
