Best time

Thu, 2009-12-10 20:16

Best time for scooping is sunrise and sunset. I have had most sucess scooping around an hour or so before the sun goes down. I think the bugger off out to the deaper water as the sun gets brighter

just on google earth checkin

Thu, 2009-12-10 22:10

just on google earth checkin out the inlet... theres a lot of areas that look good for a scoop, can you get them anywhere in the inlet or do they mainly hang around a certain area of it? I've been out in a boat with nets down there for them a few times with the father in law and we did well but never scooped there. good fun scooping :)

I like the flats on the south yunderup side

Fri, 2009-12-11 00:33

In the day they go under the sand and that is where a claw can be good to rake up the surface sand to reveal whats under, on sunup sundown they become more active heading out for food methinks.  Many crabs taken within an hour before or after sunup/sundown. That is for diving or scooping,  Scooping wading is only so good until dark when it is awesome from a small boat with spotlight in the shallows.

On the eastern side of the inlet there are a few places that have absolutley owned for crabs, technique: Wear booties or old shoes, leather rigging or diving glovesand a floating bucket or dive bag.  Walk in the shallows in sunlight less than 60 cm and if your foot hits something firm, dont lift up! put your hand down and see if its a crab, generally it will grab your hand/foot before you can get it. Have bagged out in 15 mins or less a couple of times. Not quite ready yet though. Another 2-3 weeks yet for Mandurah to really take off.

Our favorite crabbing spot is within 15 mins of the traffic bridge, great if you can stand the bloody mossies (one reason i dive in the shallows)

drop nets

Fri, 2009-12-11 06:48

Wadetolley I was using drop nets , look for weedy areas during the daylight because they can hide in the weed rather than bury themselves, deeper water is best but that is also where all the boat traffic is and you will lose nets. You will get your quotta but it will take a while , better take the esky and keep your fluids up.

Island point is good, as is the above mentioned Eastern side

But it is a trek to get into the area opposite Dawesville via Pinjarra. Sort of tricky to get to but goole earth will give you an idea.

Scooping there is great.

In front of my house in Parkridge is good to, just wave to the tenants while I fish up here in Karratha.
