Any tips for king george whiting?

Never caught a KGW so have decided to target them during the ban. If you've got a moment can you let me know what size hooks are best, best bait, what size bait, what depths to fish in etc. - Mindarie is my closest marina but will go out of any of the 4 northern marinas if anybody wants to point me in the right direction cheers Dave

KG's

I tie off to a swivel with my main line and then get a trace about 800 - 900mm long and made of maybe 8kg good flouro Carbon line. Tie a large loop into this, make the loop about 200mm in size. Make the loop start high on the trace so it's not impacting on the baited hook. On this loop I loop on a pyramid sinker, not real big, just enough to keep it on the bottom. On the tag end, which is hopefully now about 500mm long, tie off a size 1/0 or 2/0 wide gap chemically sharpened hook. Bait this up with a combination of prawn and squid, tentacles work best. Work areas between weed patches or between reef, deeper water holds the bigger kidney slappers, cast into these areas and if the KGs are about, they will usually come on pretty well straight away. If the pickers are about, move straight away to a new spot. Most deeper spots will hold up to 4 but not much more. They aren't overly sociable. There, I've revealed one of my secrets, I used this set up down in Geographe Bay and caught lots of fish, big fish up to 50cm regularly, so there's no reason it shouldn't work anywhere else.

Good luck and tight lines.

Very good advice there, Dale!  Similiar to what I do.  The only thing I can add to the above advice, is that I use those little coloured balls (green and red), just above the hooks. Have tried with and without the coloured balls. Seem to be more successful with them!

I don't use long shank hooks, a big kg will swallow them all the way down, the wide gap hooks work better as they hook up on the side of the mouth.
