Anyone else go all right today?

Stepped away from the jab chat for a bit today and got a few fish. Anyone else go well? Launched from Hillarys and to our surprise when we retrieved the boat there were no fisheries officers collecting rec catch data! Who woulda thought?

Not so good

Thu, 2022-10-13 21:50

Not so good unfortunately, hit direction bank out of Ocean Reef for bugger all, few pickers.

Tried a few spots and methods, drift bait, patternoster, vexed bottom meats but no dice.

What depths and methods did you use if you dont mind me asking?

 That sucks mate. We use

That sucks mate. We use Paternoster rigs and fresh bait. Start with the small rods to get the bait then onto the bigger gear. We will normally get the bait in close then head out and start looking around the 40m depths! Not a fan of the bottom meats myself! A lot of money for a bit of lead and a few hooks

 Cheers for the feedback,

Cheers for the feedback, tossed up the idea of gathering fresh baits on the way out as I had plenty of time but chose to spend more time looking for ground.

Might commit to getting some fresh squid and herring before heading out next time.

Yeah, wasnt nice losing a few bottom meats over the last few trips, hobby is already expensive enough...

Another question if i may, do you give the same spot a fair bit of time before moving on, lets say an hr with no action or just a few drifts then head off to another?

Thanks in advance,

Recalculating Stock Assessment

Thu, 2022-10-13 22:08

Now you've done it Moondog.
WA Fisheries will see that pic and the depletion of the spawning biomass and now need to redo their models to recalculate their Stock Assessments.
I now expect a demersal ban for 13 months a year.
...
That's a great looking feed there. Good stuff.

 Just waiting for fisheries

Fri, 2022-10-14 18:57

Just waiting for fisheries to ring me up mate. Will be a great call and I'm sure they will be to make an educated guesstimate on the weight of my catch and add it to the rec total. I agree let's go with a 13 month ban

Well done. At least you will

Well done. At least you will have a few feeds of fish in the freezer until you can get out again , whenever that will be

Snuck out Friday aswell for a good dhu and a couple of decent baldies. Yeah this ban is gonna be bloody painful and it looks like the dictator and his minion fisheries minster aren't going to budge.

Nice bag

Sat, 2022-10-15 07:53

We did same, launched from Hillays and headed toward Rotto. Plenty of activity early, got a very nice breaksea and pulled up a few foxfish that were released. Couple of large Gurnard that I hear are good on the chew, but I can't bring myself to letting them on the boat, they just look too painful!

Had one very solid hook up that pulled the hooks after a good fight, then it glassed off and the bite just shut down completely. Moved spots several times but struggled to even see anything on the sounder after that. Came in close and got a nice haul of fat sandies.

Most remarkable thing was all the whales out there, must have seen 20-30 through the day, breaching and tail slapping, some very close to us. Was a great site and great day out. Certainly beat working!

Cheers,

BD.

 Certainly does beat working

Sat, 2022-10-15 10:55

Certainly does beat working mate! Surprised to see 2 neighbour's (queenie) fish come up from the depths, been a long time since we have seen a couple of them. Plenty of whales around and we even had a little calf come up and swim around the boat while mum was jumping around 100m away from us. Friday was certainly a better day weather wise than Thursday but the fish were hungrier Thursday. Got a few mates that have long pliers and a big knife for the gurnards and they haven't had an issue getting a couple of fillets off and they do say they are tasty but I'm like you I don't like looking at the ugly buggers and the thought of getting spiked isn't worth it.
