Anyone ever heard of braid going off
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2009-01-30 11:45
I had a spool of 8lb Fireline laying around and recently decided to put it on a cheap little reel. But it appears that the line has gone off. I reckon the breaking strain is about 8 grams now.
Has anyone heard of braid going bad after a period of time?
All the best, Colin Hay

Hi Ya, has it been heat
Hi Ya,
has it been heat affected? That might damage it. I've got 10lb smoke fireline on a reel that I had now for about 5 or 6 years. It is pretty much frayed but still as strong as the day I bought it.
Cheers.

Hi Ody, It has been in a cupboard so the heat shouldn't
have been a problem I don't think. Maybe it was from a bad batch

No
No fuels/oils/surfactants/bug sprays etc stored in there Col? Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) can do this sort of thing...

No Wrass
It was in with some old clothes. My wife would say my old socks and jocks could have sent it off.

Colin, I dunno about
Colin, I dunno about fireline but I have used and still using plenty of braid that's about 5 years old and it still peforms ok. No noticeable weakening of the braid though i did not try it on the scale to see if it did deteriorate any.![](http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk139/seasonsrods/SeasonsRods/XzogaFishWreckedBanner.jpg)

youve just prompted me to
youve just prompted me to test some braids i bought in the early nineties, five differant braids all still as good as the day they were made, theyve never seen salt water but have all been stored away for the past thirteen years in my garage in a carboard box,i would take the braid back or at least write to the manufacturer, think your due some replacement at the prices we have to pay...best of luck colin

Braid!
Colin, there was a bad batch from the supplier a while ago. We just replaced them with new stuff and no worrys.....was a while ago now! To answer your question no Braid doesnt go off normally, mono does after a while but heat & sunlight expediates that!

I rang Mr and Mrs
I rang Mr and Mrs Berkley, they confirmed it,,
Don't leave it in cupboards with grotty jocks and socks, it sends it off,,,
A better place for it is on a reel they went on to say,,that confirms my own thoughts,,,,,,,,
