Balla Balla

G'day everyone,

I am heading to Westmoore Island this weekend for 6 days of intense fishing...Can anyone please tell me any useful information about the area. I am interested in fishing the hole at the mouth of the Balla Balla creek for black jew. Would also like to head wide and chase some reef fish if the weather permits.

Cheers,

Ben

More questions on this one.  Are the black jews there all year round or are they better during the summer months?  Looking forward to taking the tinny up there for a bit more of an explore.

You can also try the NE side

You can also try the NE side of Depuch Island, I use to fish in around 8 mtrs of water on the drop off, I have caught black jew all year round - absolute unstoppable monsters ! Use livies and dead bait, target the change of tide - you will also see them on the sounder, as they tend to move around.

All the shallow area's around West Moore and Depuch hold blue bone and are very worthy of themselves on light gear, even better when you can sight cast to some big beasts.

Depending on time of year, all the creeks hold barra, threadfin, jacks and fingermark- and plenty of muddies. Balla Balla cops a hammering from the grey nomads, so choose the creek systems to the west of West Moore and east of Depuch. The creeks are shallow, so be aware of rock bars. Infact be careful all around the area, it is quite shallow.

If you want to chase reef fish, I use to fish around Beagle reef and it's drop off's ( 33km from Balla Balla ramp )

Also Geographe Shoals ( 56km from Balla Balla ramp ) have worked well, alot of good ground in the deeper water off the shoals - have caught many red emporer, rankin, coral trout, NW snapper and massive cod species. If you are into diving, you will be amazed at the fish life and painted cray's.

Don't be annoyed if you catch massive cat fish when bottom bouncing, they tend to be in the same area as the Red Emporer.

Don't forget to troll between area's, I always seem to pick up Spanish, and you will have fun using jigs - the fish seem to figt way harder.

I hope the weather isn't to

I hope the weather isn't to bad for you, it looks like you will have to spend a fair bit of your time in the creeks as Most of Easter looks like crap. Just remember there are big tides a easter and it is very easy to get stuck in a creek for longer than planned if your not careful I know a few people who do like to fish the low tide change up some of the isolated creeks and they seem to have ok luck.

Good Luck

Choorles - I had such a great

Thu, 2013-03-28 22:14

Choorles - I had such a great time at Westmoore. There are fish everywhere! We were blessed with glass offs everyday which enabled us to head wide and chase reef fish. We caught nor west snapper, shit loads of golden trevs, nice sized cod, sharks, bluebone, blue lined emperor, queenies, rankin cod etc. Also caught 5 thumping muddies up the little Sherlock river. If the weather is up there is a deep hole on the west side of westmoore Island (Not far from the island). There is actually a buoy out there which indicates the northern edge of the hole. It goes from 3 meters to 12 odd meters very rapidly and there are all sorts of monsters lurking down there. There were some absolute unstoppable beasts which we couldn't turn and eventually busted off. We suspect there are some big cod down there as the caretakers on westmoore explained to me there have been some massive specimens caught there. Also good ground for bluebone on the south side of Westmoore. You can get plenty of live crabs off the rocks at night on the northern side of the island.

As bloodysmythe explained above there is a wreck on the eastern side of depuch which we had a crack at. There are golden trevs everywhere! Such good fun throwing lures at them. I dived it and saw a few thumping cod however for some reason my speargun wasn't working properly and missed every shot! The fish are still down there...I didn't however see the mulloway and trout he saw on his dive trip.

Anchor up, burley up, crack a tinnie, drop a fresh bait and hang on!! ;-)
