banging my head against a wall - dealership woes - Update - the saga continues

Picked up my boat a week or so ago with a new Yammy 70 fitted by a large well know Adelaide dealership (not going to name them but they have lost my business - ps obviously not a site sponsor). booked it in for Tuesday/Wed but not ready till friday aft. Oh well I can wear that. Pick it up Friday into the water for a test run - no probs so far. Take it back to Wallaroo (150km trip). refit sounders, radios etc and all the gear. come home work for a week and back up there yesterday. Bit of an inspection found a small hole in the transom wall which they missed sealing, seal it. Check some more another hole on the inside of the transom not sealed properly - seal it. Out for a run start getting some rattle at 3500rpm back on shore locate lose hose rattling against the cowling - no real problem, washing down and note the engine well is filling up and not draining. check the drain hole and yep, they mounted the motor on a slab of plastic against the transom (no prob in itself) but did not drill a hole through it for the drain - it sits right under the motor and no access. Bloody useless. rang them and spat it, drag boat back to Adelaide and leave it with them to fix, will have to collect it tomorrow after work and drag it back up to Wallaroo. Why do you have to check the work of supposed professionals? What if I didn't know what to check for? What if I found this in two weeks 750km away in smoky bay? What if I found this when coping a wave over the back in 2m swells? Thanks for listening to my blowing off steam. Next (20hr) service is free, it will be the last time the boat goes there unless for a warranty problem.

don't what to say realy but I guess you wont be going back , really doesn't seem to be any quality control these days , When I picked up my brand new stacer northern fisher I was not happy when I tilted down the console for the first time (which is a standard feature) and all the wiring harness pulled out of the distribution board

Definitely not isolated. I dont think that anyone deliberately does poor work, but motor replacement jobs are notorious for having issues. I know this because of numerous personal experiences. (Before the high and mighty get on me).

I found my issues after I had made it to the Monte Bello islands. Luckily, being an electrician I had plenty of silastic and cable ties to fix it short term. Would have been an expensive tow other wise.

Just when i thought id spent my money wisely.

good luck with it mate.

Poor

Thu, 2014-03-20 18:35

It is poor though, motor replacements have become a dime a dozen since four strokes exploded across the outboard scene.

When you pay a premium price for a premium product you should get premium service. Doesn't always happen unfortunately.

Best quality work...

Replacing an outboard is usually done by yourself most times. Shitty service from boat dealers is all to common and you pay a fortune for it. Mobile mechanics also very good at helping install a new motor.

Hmmm not good Paul. I'm getting a motor fitted in the next few months and can only hope I don't go through the dramas you have. I've come to the conclusion that a lot of people just don't give a crap and it's the owners of these businesses that are failing themselves. I'm constantly on my Apprentice's back to do the best he can and to clean up  his jobs afterwards. A bit of pride in your work goes a long way.

Wasn't an apprentice that did

Fri, 2014-03-21 06:58

Wasn't an apprentice that did the fitting, Spoke to the bloke about the motor when I picked it up and ran over a few things I can do in various scenarios if I have problems in remote areas (though typical of newer motors not much compared to the old two stroke). Was a nice enough bloke but hell he needs to check his work a bit better and maybe take a little more time.

Dealership of course is downplaying it as minor apart from the inconvenience factor of having to bring it back but I made it clear a potential swamped boat or rotted transom in a few years time because of their shoddy work is not what I call minor!

Still peeved - the boat should be at Wallas packed and ready for my trip (thank god for ledge and Friday funnies).

MM just got back from Smoky

Sun, 2014-04-13 08:51

MM just got back from Smoky Bay - good trip all up.

first day on the water and I noted some water sloshing around the back thought it may have been a small leak from the bung but was still there on second day (and bungs extra tight). had a look up under the engine well and can see drips from the engine well drain coming through. enough to have to switch on the bilge pump every hour or so.

Had a close look it appears they did not take the motor off at all to drill the engine well hole out - suspect they used a 90 degree elbow drill bit to drill it out from the inside. is a plastic sleeve in the drain suspect they may have cut through this with the bit.

Questions - is my transom wood now wet with potential down the track rot problems or was it just coming down the inside??

Going to be an interesting 20 hour service drop off. - considering having a marine surveyor take a peak first.

PS just received a questionnaire from Yamaha about how am I satisfied with the sales/service etc. going to be an interesting (and long) reply is I all I can say!!!

Trip was other wise great even though the weather was not the best, plenty of big KG's few gummys and other assorted species for a few good feeds.

Cheers
