Bare Rock Sailfish action
Submitted by Juiced Up on Mon, 2012-02-27 13:04
Went out on Saturday with 2 mates chasing billfish. Had a great day, ended up catching 2 each (5 Sails and 1 Marlin). We trolled about 6 miles west of Bare Rock but the action was non existant until we came across a 'Bait Ball' (Hadnt heard of one of these before - pretty cool on the sounder) which resulted in a triple hook up, all of which were landed. Ended up losing a few more before we hooked the Marlin which took about 2 hours (and 3 miles!) to subdue. Luckily the Bait Ball hadn't moved and we were soon on again - the action was non stop!
Only had the Phone, so sorry for the poor quality of the pic.
It was great fun, but its Red emperor time again I think!

Excellent to run into a baitball like that. Did the bait come to the surface, or only visible on the sounder?

Landing 3 from a triple is incredible going. Great work!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Gday Tim-o. We werent sure on what type of marlin it was. It had very bright blue stripes down the side and a pretty high dorsal fin, but was pretty dark on top. The bill was longer than the sails of the same size, I havent looked it up on the net or anything as I was just happy to get it in! (But if anyone has any idea, it would be appreciated.)
It still had plenty of go in it, unlike me, those Tiagra 50's get heavy after a while with no harness!
Also, there was a big Blue ally with something written down the side out there as well and it looked like he was getting into them too. It actually looked like they were spotting them from the roof!

Gday Bigalow, nothing gets
Gday Bigalow, nothing gets past you! - I think they were diving on another bait ball initially and it looked like they got a Billy on the spear as they pulled it over the side and bled it (we passed the area they were in on the way back from geting the marlin and saw the ball they were on), but then they trolled around like we had been doing and they were catching them and releasing them (Maybe tagging them?). We left them there as we couldnt be motivated to fight anymore (Too bloody hot!)
They had some pretty impressive game outfits from what we could see and knew how to use them. I suppose with the amount of work up here, eventually there is going to be people who know how to catch fish better than the locals! Hopefully some more fishing grounds/species can be opened up in the future! What do you reckon?

Great effort
Not the usual area you get the billies. West off bare rock and towards west reef more known for BBashing and mackies. Great to hear off sails and other stickfaces in that area. Would be interested to know whats happening at the ships ATM.
