Be careful Fri 26/06 Huge Swell

Just read an article on WA Today, apparenty there is a forecast for huge swell around tomorrow. Be careful out there.

"A wave period - the time for two consecutive crests to pass a fixed point - is roughly 14 seconds, but this swell could see periods of between 18 and 20 seconds.

"This will make for some really big sets. The kind where I'd expect to see jet-skis out on the water towing surfers in" he said.

All coastal areas in the South West are expected to see significant swell before the size starts to weaken as it moves up the coast towards Jurien Bay and Carnarvon.

The cause of the huge waves is a deep low in the Indian Ocean which saw storm-force winds of up to 200km/h earlier in the week generate the swell which is headed towards the WA coast."

It is an awesome sight, a big ocean swell while out at sea, one that I never tire of seeing.
Unfortunately dont see them up on the NW coast

Big Swell

Thu, 2015-06-25 19:28

Copped swell between 14 and 18 metres when bringing a boat over from Auckland to Eden in 2000, like climbing up the side of a steep hill, sit on the top for couple of seconds then do the run down the other side. The 5 days before that wasn't funny though, copped an absolute belting so I suppose we earned it.

Thu, 2015-06-25 19:46

We copped 16m swell when sailing down from Exmouth, off the back of DHI.

The boat with a 20m mast, sat upright between the waves because there was no wind down there.

Not sure if it was that or the mouldy cheese sandwich though what followed was three days of vomiting until we got to the Abrolhos

 Crossing the Drake Passage

Thu, 2015-06-25 19:52

Crossing the Drake Passage comming back from Antarctica...was interesting lets just say... a 105m boat getting thrown around like a toy........ swell was well up above 15-20 and 50-60 knot winds...the boat had to turn away from its path and start driving towards new zealand (we were heading to argentina) for a day to go with it....

Don't plan on going

Thu, 2015-06-25 23:36

I wouldn't plan on going between the north end of GI and Carnac Island. When a close out happens there it really closes out right across the gap, not just in places. I haven't seen it from a boat but have witnessed it on a winters day from the north end of GI and it was truly frightening to think what would happen to anyone caught out between the islands.

big swells

Fri, 2015-06-26 13:57

as per Meglodon's comment, I would be very carefull north side of carnac island between the mew stones, massive full length close outs thru there in big swells, speaking from pretty scary experience

 Just back from a morning

Fri, 2015-06-26 14:45

Just back from a morning out. Only saw one roller in challenger passage. Parmelia bank had a few sheep pop up and inside Fish Rock also had the occasional white wall. It was certainly building.

water quality in Owen anchorage and outside FSC is shocking though with only 2-3m of viz inside the sailing club.

Went out to clean the bottom of the big boat and had a squid onthe way home. Managed three cuttlefish only.

Fri, 2015-06-26 21:02

Maybe a Stupid question but I've been there recently passing through, and walked along the bay to the point just having a gander. there's a few places you can surf, and I can see why people move there for that lifestyle. i noticed quite a few breaks  along the edge of the  point and the cliffs  is centres not far of of them but in the middle of the bay ? Then there's another break over towards boat ramp ?

Fri, 2015-06-26 20:11

I was at the bent street ramp to day and got chatting with 4 young blokes that had just come back in on their boat , " get any fish boys"" Nah mate we went for a surf its fair pumping behind seal island" figgered out that meant that meant they had been out surfing , was good to see young healthy looking blokes with big smiles on their faces , rather that the meth heads we see everyday in the newspaper, surfing something I never have done but wish I had

Big at Ningaloo

Sat, 2015-06-27 20:25

We went out this morning after the easterly dropped. Central passage fronm Lefroy Bay is safe in any swell, but, as you get  out towards the drop-off, it shallows up to 8 fathoms before quickly dropping to 20 fathoms. A big set stood up on us as we approached the drop. First one was big, and I could see the second one over the top of the first  it never breaks here, i said to my mate, but it was pretty scary racing towards something about 20 foot high sharp enough to  make me throttle off as  we crested it, but didn't even feather, and then we were in the safety of deep water. The fishing was the best we've had so far--not much pelagic action, with only one mackerel released, but the floating gar got me a nice rankins and a horse of a long nosed emperor at 89cm, probably a pb.Then I started putting lightly weighted mulies down and caught big spangled one after the other, and even a nice green jobfish, all on the Crostage Majorcraft PE 1-3 with a Stradic 4000FJ and 10kg braid. We left a hot bite at 1.30 to see if we could find a sail, no luck there so we went in, surfing big swells across the shallows. And not a single shark all day.
