south mate, not that far out!

Mon, 2012-03-26 18:30

south mate, not that far out! Also managed to get a coral trout dont know if they are rare was decent size didnt keep it we already had enough fish. Yeah mate put it this way the snapper and dhu's werent interested with bait so tryed softies and got them all on that got 2 other dhu's undersize though.

i would recommend giving them a go for sure and best feeling hooking up to a nice fish on a lure!

Actually almost lost one to a two meter bronzy happened to me once before one a massive snapper wasnt going to happen again got it in just in time!

Cheers :)

Obvious question

Mon, 2012-03-26 19:22

But the way it is worded it would appear superficially to have only been two people out there for this catch?

If there was only 2 of you

Tue, 2012-03-27 05:47

If there was only 2 of you mate then pretty sure that bottom line of fish is about 4 fish to many. You might want to read up on bag limits champ As its only 2 cat 1 high risk demersals per licensed fisherman onboard. And the snapper the dhu and the black ass all come under that catagorie.

No I don't

Tue, 2012-03-27 07:00

But others woke up to what I was thinking - we are seeing better inshore and offshore catches as a result of several fisheries changes including recreational  limits (mind you I remain convinced that the greatest change for the better was the stopping of pro cray fishermen using drop lines some ten years ago).

On my last solo trip only did half a drift, good dhuie, good snapper and had to return a second equally good snapper hooked at the same time - and yes this is in close metro waters sor...................sixth trip in a row that I have bagged out and nothing more than 10 miles offshore

Whilst we might not like the limits it still potentially provides everyone with a feed and I for one can certainly see the improvements in dimersal numbers and size

that is a great catch for sure with a nice variety ror the table. just read up on the regs about what you can keep. yes the limit is 4 but only 2 demersal and 2 palegic, the skippy are fine as they are not cat 1. as far as the trout goes , it wouldnt surprise me, i have caught a good 4kg one in Dongara so with the warmer waters they could easily come this far down. one thing you could do in futuer is take a camera with you so there is no doubt to what you catch. great feed and sounds like a great session

Well i wasnt aware of such a rule, thought it was fine fisheries even checked? i thought they would have mentioned something.. if i had taken over the limit.

Well i guess now i know thanks for sharing i dont like taking anything over the limit, making me feel bad now. guess i can look at it in a possitive way wont happen again and as the saying goes "you learn something new everyday"

Two on the boat then four

Tue, 2012-03-27 19:23

Two on the boat then four demersals allowed. Two of those can be Dhuies (1 per person) You should have checked before you fished Metro it seems you made an honest mistake but the rule is there's no ignorance for the law otherwise everyone would be doing it. That Blackarse is a beauty though.

Check this out mate, get familiar with the rules. Make no mistake fisheries will nail you and the fines are pretty harsh.

I have found a few blokes at work are still fishing with the old bag limits too, pretty poorly handled transition if you ask me. Would have been an idea to send an alert to all boat owners, but I saw nothing.

You may also need to look at getting a boat fishing licence if you don't already have one too mate.

What time did you get back at night, Metro? If it was after midnight 2 days' bag limit would have applied The rules arent exactly clear on that one either.

Lastchance they are, you have to be out at least 5 hours. IE leave before 7pm and return after 5am to be counted as 2 days.

Wed, 2012-03-28 15:45

Anthony yes i do have boat fishing liscense and yes fisheries did check our catch was a lady at woodys point.. Yes i was lucky but i thought i was doing the right thing, atleast i now know and have learnt my lesson.

LastChance that is a bloody good point you made we were out there from 3 pm sat arvo, got in 9 am sunday morning. Obviously the whole time wasnt spent fishing, had to sleep.

So i wonder for us being out that long if the 2 days bag limit applied?

Should have mentioned that to start, theoretically you are allowed two days bag and hence why you didn't breach any rules. Well done mate, few good fish for in close.

still not sure boys

Wed, 2012-03-28 20:36

I don't think it matters what time you started and/or how many days you have been out !

If you are at the boat ramp and you are stopped by fisheries, then your posession limit is the the daily bag limit !

Only in your home may you posess the larger amount of quantities.

Not saying you boys are wrong - but that is my interpretation of the rules - and would definitely not risk it for the fine.

Anyone out there with the correct interpretation ?

without sounding too cynical

Thu, 2012-03-29 03:42

without sounding too cynical expect everyone now to say i launched @11:59 pm on saturday night when they get checked at 3 pm on sunday arvo, thus entitling you to two days catch. how can they prove you didnt???or will the onus be on the owner to prove they did?

You need to prove you have been out at least 5 hours

Thu, 2012-03-29 06:58

each day mate. You have to provide the proof not them. There are cameras on the major ramps now that they can look through the footage for your car and trailer. The hardest part with fishing over night metro is the parking fines. If they want to be bastards and you buy your ticket on Saturday and go out until say Sunday lunch and they come past Sunday mid morning you can get a ticket.

If you are going to go to that extreme to get a couple of extra

Thu, 2012-03-29 13:43

fish good luck to you. They have a lot of resources at their disposal now days.Had them come aboard (i invited them) after a stand up discussion about the fact that i had 2 dhu fish on board and the fact i only had one in the esky. They had info we had caught 2,which was true, and it wasnt until i showed them my tag chart with the fish released that they relented. It has me stuffed how they knew we caught 2 on the one drift but they did.Not another boat for miles.

cheers for the positive

Thu, 2012-03-29 22:10

cheers for the positive feedback appreciate it!

Yeah fisheries would be able to check the camera's if it came to that point, our boat was there sat afternoon and back sunday morning. Never intentionally did the wrong thing bottom line.

I was just lucky that the two day bag limit rule applied to us, I have now read the rules and regulations live and you learn.

Hopefully next time we do better!

Just wondering if anyone else catches big dhu's in 12 meters of water, in fairly close?
