Biggest Fish - crapiest gear??
Submitted by crasny1 on Tue, 2014-08-26 10:42
Just wonder what might be the best fish anyone has caught on "crap" gear.
Mine would have to be a Mulloway about 15kg caught on a real Woolworth special $10 rod-reel combo. BUT it was on a holiday in South Africa - so was a Kabeljou or Kob (SA for Mulloway). Near Cape Town - Strand.
Smoked the reel, was pretty much fused afterwards, broke the tip, one other guide near the reel seat broke off, but landed to the delight off my cousen. Tasted better there than I remember Mulloway here.
Obviously was stoked as I was only trying to catch Elf (tailor).

$9 internet rod, old diawa 4000C with 10lb line
Pensioner Bank off Geraldton - Samson Fish of over 30kg's - my one huge regret was that the fish died despite lengthy efforts to revive it - wasn't wasted as it was used in a mates cray pots

33lb G.T.
About 25 years ago fishing off the oyster rocks near the Mildura Wreck at Exmouth chucking a popper around with an old 10ft two piece diawa rod with one guide held on with insulation tape old diawa reel with bottom drag with 20lb mono. It was a spectacular sight to see this big GT come half out of the water to smash the popper!...Think I just about shit my pants back then! lol. Took 30 minutes to finally drag this amazing fish up onto the rocks with a wave, my back was shagged could hardly hold the fish up for a photo.
Drag was pooped hand was getting burnt from trying to stop the spool, misses was cacking herself as I was hopping around the rocks bloody great fish and one that hasn't been beaten land based since.

Sambo rod and reel caught a 5 kg estuary cod then a hour later the rod tip gave way on a snag. Not the biggest fish but was pretty stoked and put a good bend on the cheap rod.

15 kg mulloway
Was fishing off the end of the Old Cut in Bunbury, 3 big rods out with live tailor on and cast out with the small rod[8 foot solid glass rod with Mitchell 303 reel and 10lb line] to catch another livie, sure enough the mulloway grabbed the bit of mullet on a 1/0 hook and took off. No torch, gaff, 3 other lines to work around and no one to call for help.
Managed to get it on to a rock at waters edge and slip a hand inside the gills to lift it out, bad move, felt the gill rakers straight away but there was no way I was going to let it go.
2 trips down the rocks to carry the fish and all the gear back and blood pissing from the many cuts in my hand but there was nothing that could wipe the smile off my dial with my first mulloway over 10kgs

Was fishing the mouth of the
Was fishing the mouth of the Clearverville creek near Karratha with a servo bought handline with mullet bought at the same servo. I ended up landing a 1.3m mulloway. My mates and myself could not believe it! Just goes to show the good old handline can come up with the goods.
Do the right thing and there will be fish tomorrow.

Caught this bad boy on a Kmart $30 Jarvis walker special 8" rod with the 10 or 12lb mono that came with it off the beach at Bundegi. Certainly was a suprise when it almost spooled me. Estimated 1.1m (maxed out my fisheries size limit sticker)

Shark Mack
Hooked this 8kg sharkie just of Freo, caught it on my cheap trout rod and 1000 sena reel spooled with 4lb kmart braid. I had a small soft plastic flick bait on that was half melted from being left in the car. I was just flicking it out to get herring for live bait when this beast decided to grab it.
Took nearly 30 min to land it and got some of the action on video too. http://youtu.be/A7gj_9EKWF0?list=UUB_zUdPMNmGN6cfeHELkOlw

Not caught but hooked up for
Not caught but hooked up for a while...one of the older chaps who came on a recent trip to dhi hooked a sail fish about 1.8 long whilst bait casting on a shitty old rod..we called it for a shark till it came up to cliff and started flicking his head around all I remember is hearing his old drag making this horrible grinding noise as it peeled away from the cliffs thinking f$ck if he lands this it will be a miracle

A mate landed a good mully in
A mate landed a good mully in SA fishing for whiting, can't remember how big but was a beauty... Same bloke was driving a dingi towing a bloke who was skurfing behind when he spotted a big mully cruising slowly in the shallows so he motored up and bailed out n pounced on it and dragged it up the beach in front of the onlookers... That was 50lber... The bloke on the board had no idea what he was up to until he popped up dragging a big fish by the Gills...
They reckon it mighta been crook or hit by the boat but yeah you wouldn't think it was fighting fit that's forsure...

Nearly boated
On holiday in Exmouth 8 years ago fishing south of the marina in a 14' dinghy borrowed from a mate who lives up there. Took out the Wife and two youngsters for a late arvo session. My young bloke was fishing with a 6' Red Wolf Saturn rod and reel combo which I think we bought from Big W. He's hooked up to a good fish on a rig I would usually use to catch whiting. The reel has screamed into action, rod bending and he can't hang on, think he was only 5 or 6 back then. I took over and was near ending the line on spool. The wife and kids started to pack themselves a little as they thought Dad was going to land a bloody whale in the tinnie. Immediate action had to be taken so with rod in one hand I fired up the Merc and gave the Wife some hurried instructions on how to operate it and told her to follow that line. Well, we started of with a few 360's before the wife had worked out how to navigate a course in a fairly straight line. By this time the kid's were really shitting themselves, not just because Dad was determined to land this whale but because Mum was getting yelled at by Dad on how to steer the boat. About 40 mins later we finally caught up to this fish I regained a lot of the line but the bail arm was just about ready to part. By this time a small floatilla had gathered coming back from a days fishing to the ramp to watch this circus unfolding. Finally had colour and I couldnt believe the Cobia I was looking at, told the Wife to hit the breaks and pass me the gaff. There is no gaff she says, F@#@, no net, not that this would've fit in a net, the kid's were really peaking now that they that I was bringing this whale into the boat. Rod in one hand I managed to grab the tail and wrestle this fish, didn't want to put the rod down in case I couldn't handle it and it went back in and that is exactly what happened. Rod in two hands again and ping, it stayed on the surface for a while and then back it went down to the depths. I didn't even have the energy to swear and the floatilla was giving us a round of applause for the effort. Still have the rod to this day.
