Boat Anchor Rope Recommendations

I have 6.1 Metre Quintrex ally (Ocean sport). It is currently fitted with 45 metres of what seems to be about 15mm nice soft Nylon anchor rope and 4 metres of anchor chain. The entire length seems to short for anchoring in 30 metres of water etc for fishing if going by the 3 to 1 ratio. The size of the existing rope also seems excessive??

Need recommendations for a suitable size/length and type of anchor rope for my boat. I will be using a anchor retrieval system in some instances as I got the retrieval system with my boat. It will mainly be for general use around Perth/Rottnest and Exmouth region.

Was think of splicing 50 metres of 12mm silver anchor rope from BCF into the existing line ($60 a roll) will splicing an anchor rope be ok, is 12mm to thick etc??

8mm nylon would be fine

8mm nylon would be fine strength wise but 14mm is on for ease of handling I guess. On my boat, I have 12mm spliced into 10mm (little thicker for protection when anchoring in rocky areas) into 8mm.

Personally, I wouldn't splice silver into Nylon as they have different characteristics, starters being that Silver floats and nylon sinks. Nylon has elastic properties (hence being used in anchor ropes where spring is good) where silver doesn't really.

I think that 10mm snylon costs ~$2.00 PM and personally I would buy 50m of that and splice it in.

I'd keep it for stern/spare and buy 100m

Your right, 45m is way too short for safe use in 30m of water. I would keep it as a spare or for use when anchoring both fore and aft off the shore and buy 100m of 12-14mm. I am no expert at splicing, but have more confidence in a single length, especially if anchoring and leaving the boat unattended (eg. overnight or diving). It's one thing to have an anchor rope part when you are on board and can react, but another if you are not on board. I picked up a couple of 100m rolls of 16mm via eBay a few years ago, but the trader was Perth based (an industrial shed in Bayswater somewhere). Because they were full rolls, the price/m was much cheaper than cut lengths and I could inspect the rope before I took delivery

14/15mm

I have the exact same boat as you have and my anchor rope is 14 or 16mm. Cant remember.

The chain on my set up is 6m in lenght. If I remember correctly it should as long or longer than your hull. I could be wrong tho.

I bought a 250m roll and cut it in half. The spare 125m is kept under the bunks out of the way. The 2 ropes could be joined together if required.

Its also handy as a tow rope which I have used just once in the past.

The thicker rope as stated above is easier on the hands if you have to pull it up from the deep.

One thing to do is to try to keep it out of the sun ,as you probably already know the sun will bugger it after time.

Cheers and safe boating

12mm

Get yourself a roll of 12mm, doesn't matter if its poly or silver rope [silver is easier on the hands]. If you get poly you will need to stretch it when you run it out [always take it from the centre of the roll], tie one end to a tree and the other to the tow bar on your wagon and give it some stick. This will allow to to coil it without it twisting up. Ideally it is easier if you cut it in half and splice an eye on one end.

One bit to remember --- its an offence if you don't have enough rope to anchor in the depth you are in.

How does that work?

I didn't know that it was an offence not to carry enough rope for the depth you are in but how would that work if you were in 200+ meters??
