Boat carpet glue

Hi guys, I need to stick down the carpet after pulling it up to access the fuel tank. Any tips on what glue to use. Looking for something that will hold it down but will come up easy if I need to access the tank again.

cheers

Most contact adhesive (Bear, Sika, Sellys) will certainly hold it down and allow you to remove again, with a bit of grunt though good luck getting it off the surface you are adhering to.

contact adhesive is the norm.

brush it on both of the surfaces youre sticking together, wait a few minutes for it to go tacky, then stick them together. you can also get it in an aerosol/spray can (Selly's I think), that is an easier way to apply it to the carpet.

it will remove (with a fair bit of force) later on if required.

Think thats the Selly's product. Expensive but probably the most common i've seen, as it's been said comes in aerosol or small to bulk tubs.

Spray Adhesive

Hey Simmo, I used Sika spray contact adhesive purchased from Bunnings. I found I got a more even coat with the spray & quicker.
I did it in November & havn't had any probs with it so far.
Spray both surfaces, wait a few mins then go for it. It is a little forgiving so don't panic if it is not correct the first time.
Hope this helps.

 Hair dryer or heat gun

Wed, 2016-03-09 11:09

Hair dryer or heat gun should should soften it and make life easier if need be to lift up again down the track ... most upholsterers would have a permanent glue spray pot hooked up to a compressor which would make short work of it or give them some cash for a jar full as they’d buy it in 20ltr drums . As mentioned brush it on both sides and if it’s a largish area , I’d be rolling the carpet up and gluing and laying it across the length as you roll it back out in position in sections to avoid dinkle and wrinkles as much as possible .

The small aerosol cans will work ok if the underside of the carpet is reasonably sealed from the old glue otherwise you’d be chewing through a few cans getting good coverage pending on the area ..

Put it on with press studs.

Put it on with press studs. Makes it easier to remove to clean or replace. No problems with moving or bunching so why would you glue ?

because

after a few months of sun exposure, salt, a splash or 2 of fuel, eskys/tackle boxes/etc sliding across the floor, it will bunch up and very quickly tear the carpet.

been down that path. glue is the way, the light, and the future!!
