Boat Improvement - Rewiring the boat

As part of the improvements I'm doing to the old girl was to rewire the accessories, so basically rewiring apart from engine harness.

The boat is 12 years old and I tell you what when it was wired originally the "auto sparkie" mustn't have been very good. The bus bars that were used were terrible, wiring was wrapped everywhere, in-line fuses everywhere,, very average to say the least. I'm surprised I haven't had many issues to be honest.

Tidied up all the wiring and installed a proper fuse / junction box so easy to figure out if a fuse pops. Removed the isolators and cleaned them all up, small amount of green death but nothing serious which was good to see.

Took a day and a half full days to get it done but so glad we did it. Looks a hell of a lot better and easier to deal with if there are issues

A few before and after photos attached

Next thing is a bit of ally work and painting

My BarCrusher was the same.

.. though it did have a propper fuse panel.

The anchor winch and trim tabs must have been added as separate 'afterthoughts' and connected wherever convenient.

I now have 3 fuse panels to separate out electronics (via a power filter), lights etc and 'noisy stuff' ( winches, deck wash, trim tabs etc) fed via a 100A circuit breaker next to the batt isolation switches

All fuses are labelled with use and amps; and I carry circuit diagrams.

20nm off shore is NOT a good place/time to be learning your electrics if a problem arises.

Agree mate that's why we decided to rewire it. Mainly safety seasons not that we have had many issues when out

I found the same with my trim tabs, they were hooked into constant power rather than key switch power, therefore they never reset. Now that we have wired them  correctly when you turn the key off they reset as they are supposed to.

cheers

Frankly...

we are fortunate to have the skills to do it... and do it properly.

I shudder when I think of the number of boats with potentially unsafe wiring... and the owners who dont understand the danger they may be in.
