Boat sank in Warnbro Sound - Sunday 24 April
I haven't seen anything in the papers but I witnessed a boat sink in Warnbro Sound on Sunday while we were taking my inflatable for a test run.
My girlfriend and her son were on the inflatable just out the front of the beach launch ramp to the East of Bent Street and I observed an orange smoke flare go off way out in the middle of the sound. I got my ladies attention and got her son off the inflatable and told her to go out to a fishing boat about 200m offshore (a maroon Surtees) and tell them as they were facing the shore. Half way out to them a rocket flare went up and that got their attention and they raced out there. As they left their fishing spot the boat in distress went under and disappeared. The Surtees picked the one person up and made their way to bent street as the Rockingham Sea Rescue came around Penguin Island.
The guy in the boat was apparently ok but I have no other details. I can only assume that the guy on the Surtees did a GPS mark of where it went down for recovery purposes.
That's all I have..

From Facebook:
"On Sunday I took the boat out searching for some new ground. Was out for about 30min before boat started taking on water. Started bailing but couldnt keep up.
Set off flare hoping someone could tow us to venturi the water out. Before anyone reached me the water lapped over the back and i knew i was in trouble. Set off another flare and grabbed a life jacket.
Within seconds the boat completly filled and fliped. I jumped in and scrambled on top of the boat. But it kept on sinking. All this happend under 1min before the boat sunk and I was waving to the boats heading over.
Huge thanks to thoose who came to rescue me.
Lost my sounder with 2 years worth of GPS marks, tackle and a couple of combos.
After reaching shore sea rescue soon arrived and we went back out searching for the boat. Spent almost 2 hours but couldnt find it.
Not sure what happend, no it wasnt the bungs."

cheers
Good one Swompa, yep i can certainly back him up that it went down fast. It will probably wash up as the winter storms roll in to Warnbro Sound but it was out in the deep drop off area.

Early Flare
I wonder if an earlier flare would have saved him?
I would be in the same way myself wait until absolutley needed but in the case a precautonary flare might have saved him.

it was quick
There was only a minute or so between the smoke flare and the parachute flare and the boat sunk as the paraflare was still coming down. scary stuff. Maybe if he put the smoke out before he stared bailing the water but it could have been something he thought he could deal with..

Gave me goosebumps reading
Gave me goosebumps reading what happened, same sort of area as my incident a few years ago and sounds like it happened just as quick. Flares saved me too, friendly reminder that when things go to shit, make sure your safety gear is only a quick grab away, things go to shit real quick when it does

I think about your experience with your Ski sinking everytime I'm out behind Garden Island.

Thats some scary stuff.
I'd really like for the details of these sort of incidents to be published and sent out via e-mail. I think awareness of how quick things can go south and what was done to survive (or not) would help to change some perceptions around water safety, and life jackets in particular.

Sadly and just slightly of subject
It appears a fisherman has been washed from the stones down south. The tv news tonight has it that a fisherman has been washed of whilst fishing at the salmon holes out of Albany today.
Lets all hope that a miracle happens and he is found alive.

wow sure hope it isn't
wow
sure hope it isn't correct , the swell has been big down here in the last 24 hours ,
augusta yesty was pretty wild
further south today would have been the same , cant think why anyone would want to try and fish it like that at the salmon holes
not much chance of surviving if he did go in unfortunatly

Wow, Salmon Holes again. How can people be so complacent. I know it's harsh, but it shits me that the people put the rescue volunteers at risk. There are rings and harnesses at Salmon Holes. No one should ever be washed into the sea there.

going wrong
If something can go wrong it will.My brother accepted an invite to go out with a mate who had just bought a 33 ft bondwood with an old 200hp johnson 2 stroke. The thing had been out the water for 2 years and all the wood had shrunk.they cruised 30 odd km out of the cut in dawesville at night and started fishing a mark.My brother noticed water round his ankles and commented on it to his mate who was up the bow.he replied its a self draining deck till he saw the water level and declared we are sinking. There was just enough air space left to start the motor and get enough forward motion for the deck to drain.Took about 6 hours to get back.fun times for all.He has had similar experiences and we call him captain tragic
just do it.

That is just looney tune stuff
To take an old boat out at night if it hasn't been in water for a while is pushing the safety and survival envelope to the extreme.

same brother
This is the same younger brother who did these things
.Fell out the boat as we were nearing the ramp at dawesville marina got headbutted on the nose by a dolphin{read bull shark} and I had to drag him back in thinking any minute he is going to lose a leg
.Rewired his 14ft fiberglass forward control boat and covered all the connections at what looked like some sort of relay/junction box /regulator with plumbers silicone and called it a silicone chip.somehow the metal strip around the tub became electrified when the engine was running.suprised more than one person trying to get in at idle.when he was flat out on waroona dam at night it was like star wars with blue current flashing all over the gunwales.we called it the electric eel
.I Paddled same boat further with an esky lid than motor ever went.had dodgy coils that went great cold but stopped working when hot.It would always go in the drive and get you out fishing just dont try to get back.Never let him go out the Dawesville cut.Once he took his wife and 2 small daughters to Waroona dam and crossed the dam for a picnic and had to swim them back towing said boat with the rope in his teeth
.played golf at preston beach and he lost a 7 iron
.had a big male kangaroo bang on his door making wierd noises and when he opened the door it punched him in the face and hopped off
.I caught my dad putting 2 male plugs on one extension lead and he said its O.K.because the other cable had 2 female plugs
.had a cousin who had no grease so he used grinding paste instead on his wheel bearings when i said not too good he said but I used the fine one.At least he probably would not be far from home when they failed
We have to minimize our stories at family gatherings to make them less horrific.I am sure I am not alone
just do it.

I took my young fella out on
I took my young fella out on Sunday through the Dawesville cut for a good two hours. I've got a sealed outer hull and recently replaced all my bung washers but have mixed them up with the old ones and I remember the bung washer was quite hard and didn't seat in properly and I forcefully screwed it in. When we returned I noticed water dripping down to the keel and when I removed the bungs water started pissing out of the outer hull. I went inside to grab a beer and I came out and it was still pissing water. Must have been a good 30-50L in there and who knows how much would have gone in doing an all dayer so just shows how something so minor can lead to something more sinister.
Safe to say I've again replaced all my bungs and marked them this time and ditched any that look old and hard.

Nah no bilge pump in the sealed outer hull got two automatic ones in the bilge of the inner hull.
Was definitely the bung washer as it happened once before not screwing it in properly and haven't had a problem since I replaced them but I made the mistake of keeping the old ones 'just in case' and ended up mixing them with the new ones.

Well off shore one and raised
Well off shore once and raised some cabin cushions to find the hull half full of water. As we headed in we jury rigged a bilge pump and dropped it into the water and as we only had a short length of hose that would not reach the self draining deck we stuck it into the mid ship kill tank to drain through. Got back okay and drained endless amount of water out.
Later discovered the side fitting for the kill tank hose had broken off and with four on one side had filled the hull as we drift fish.
Still laugh at the fact we were just circulating the water around in a loop on the hour long trip back.
Recommend anyone with such fittings carry a couple of champagne corks
