Boat Tracker

Was talking to a copper I do some work with and got onto the subject of boat security and mentioned I have a hitch helmet, wheel clamp and Datadot (which he says Police don't support anymore by the way) he offered me a very handy tip I thought I'd pass on.

Heaps of us have an old smartphone sitting a drawer and rather than forking out hundreds for a boat tracker he suggested I simply put a SIM card in my old iPhone and hotwire it to one of my batteries hiding it somewhere in the boat where it will get GPS reception. There are a few tracking apps that alert you when your device leaves a certain zone and all you need to do is track the boat to its resting location and call the cops to meet you there to retrieve it.

Obviously nothing is foolproof and it can be disabled but if you have a phone sitting there doing nothing every little bit helps in protecting your pride and joy.

Yeah think you can get a SIM only from for $5/month or if you are with Optus like me they provide you a second data SIM card for other devices linked to your account i.e. any data used off the second SIM comes off your total allowance

 Great for around the house

Great for around the house but they only work on bluetooth and have a range of 100 feet. Might have to strap some to my remote controls that my 18m old always goes walkies with

 Good lateral thinking.  If

Good lateral thinking.  If you get a prepaid sim it should still remain active once the credit expires with no ongoing costs, just won't be able to make calls.
