boating in the night

 hey everyone,

going to go out for the first time at night on sunday night. we are gonna try and fish for snapper, since its our first time in the boat at night we dont really wanna travel any further than cockburn sound, are there any spots in cockburn worth fishing at night for snapper or other species? any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers vinnie

 Heaps of spots mate, just

Fri, 2015-07-03 20:07

Heaps of spots mate, just pic some structure, anchor up, cube up and wait....

Watch out for ships in the night..... Literally!

if you've never been out before you'll be surprised how invisible (and quite) container ships and tugs and more likely their massive wake is when you're anchored up in the sound....

Been broadsided a couple of times by the wake off a fast moving tug which I thought was miles away until five minutes later a wake wave hit me....

full moon on at the moment should give u heaps of night vision thou so you'll be right mate

it's definitely worth a night fish in the sound mate

yep keep a keen eye out for container ships they are hard to beat sometimes! its deceiving how fast they can move! best to put a proximity alarm on ya radar if night fishing! don't know about in shallow but 7-3 days before the full moon the deep fish go spastic!

 If you've never been at

If you've never been at night probably a good idea to leave in the afternoon, make a track on your sounder you can follow back in the dark. That way you give any pots a wide berth and you know it is safe passage.

Also the mussel farms, there every where. Quite easy to get stuck in the maze in the dark.

 Also make certain your boat

Fri, 2015-07-03 22:24

Also make certain your boat is showing the correct lights.

I reckon half of all small boats put up the wrong lights.

Masthead light

Fri, 2015-07-03 23:38

Make sure that the masthead light is working ok.

Also as has been mentioned the wake from tugs moving at a good speed can and do create a very big bow wave, if caught close to the offending vessel it can be quite a frightening experience believe me.

Make sure that you have plenty of anchor rope out (called rode) because if you don't you run the real risk of not being able to ride the bow wave/wake of big vessels.

And keep a sharp look out if near the channel.

Light up

Sat, 2015-07-04 07:01

Good LED's for your deck light are fantastic and dont draw to much from the battery. Make sure you have a squid jig out and if you get a smallish one live bait it. Everything loves fresh squid.

 Been a few previous cockburn

Sat, 2015-07-04 10:48

Been a few previous cockburn night fishing threads if you can dig them up and maybe get a idea of where to try .. snapper , mulloway or gummies .

Regarding being underway at night the only things I could add would be to dim your instrumentation and for deckie and skipper to keep a keen eye out ideally directly not through windows or clears . Tiny little anchor lights on tinnies are hard to pick at times .
Other than that just take it easy on the throttle , music wise Bob Marley would be a better option than AC/DC for night cruising .. Good Luck

well we will probably head out about 2 or 3 to catch some fresh squid and herring first. does anyone know if there are still any squid around and where abouts should produce some. and dad also wants to try and catch some king george whiting, does anyone know any spots for these either. weve tried in the sound for them before but with no luck. you can PM if you dont to post public

cheers vinnie
