Looked at all the options - road train, rail etc - even flying over and hiring a camper van to sleep in with a tow ball or a trayback ute. Ended up driving over by myself in 3 days from Perth to Melbourne, rested up a couple of days and then drove back in 3 days. Cost me all up $1500 in my T/D Pajero including one nights stay in a motel in Port Augusta (2nd nite to freshen up). Lots of coffee & a few red bull plus books on CD were great to listen to. Fuel was $1.40 a litre in Perth at the time so pretty close to what it is now. Averaged over 1100kms a day so plenty of driving but something always interesting to see. If you want more info send me a P.M. Cheers.
