Busselton Region
Submitted by Sekans on Fri, 2009-01-02 09:19
I'm heading down to the Busselton region in about a week. I'll be staying at a resort near the beach and will be looking for some places to go fishing. Other than the jetty, what places would be good to fish and what types of fish should I be targeting for this time of year? I thought maybe Canal Rocks, Bunker Bay as I have seen these names pop up a few times on the internet. I assume the beach directly out from the resort i'm staying at will not hold any decent fish. I am restricted to land based areas only.
Any tips on bait, rigs, lures and whats biting at the moment would be much appreciated.
Cheers

you may get tailor from the beach out front of resort in the morning/afternoon......just watch all the people crowding the beach...ha ha
plenty of LB options. any rock/headland around the cape with wash will produce fish. plenty of tailor, salmon, sambo's and even pinkies inhabit these area. word of warning though, watch the swell and people have been killed.
moses rock is one spot that produces and has the added bonus of rock anchor points. I recently hiked the first stage of the cape to cape trail and a vehicle track runs parallel. mother loads of reef with wash to throw lures from or even bait fish........just need to get down there....(broken jaw ATM so doctor wont let me)....but definitly worth a look I reckon. if no fish then specie location to enjoy the views.
use standard rigs but my preference for biat is a running rig or wightless gang. just depends on your specific target species.
I know there will be a few members your way that week so drop them a PM if you like. pretty sure allrounder and Hlokk are going...

Yep, will be down there.
Yep, will be down there. Just send a PM if you want to catch up some time. Going to try busselton jetty, and a few rocks between the capes and rocky/sandy bays near dunsborough.

From the bays you mention try for skippy and tailor. Lots of squid running at the moment for eating or fresh bait??

Siesta Park
There's a small rocky outcrop (groyne) about half a km east of the park (back towards Busso) that can produce A LOT of beefy herring, as well as some salmon trout, in a very short time. I almost always use lures for this type of fishing but in this particular spot the good old whitebait on a mini gang seems to trump everything else. An incoming tide, early in the morning, has worked best for me here.
Hlokk (Matt)...let us know how you go off the jetty, especially if you get on to some bonito. Will be taking the family down for a couple weeks next month, along with the boat, but hoping to try the jetty few times.

Spent the Last 2 weeks in
Spent the Last 2 weeks in Busso, mainly did boat fishing but did a spot of landbased and had my friends hitting some landbased spots.
Out the end of the jetty early morning(out before sunrise) got 20 very good sized herring and 1 tailor. Saw some other people getting a couple of good sized squid. As the morning wore on the fishing seemed to die off. Went for a snorkel out the end of the jetty. Millions of big herring schooling right under the pylons, also saw a school of about 20 tailor 1-1.5kg snooping around the herring schools. Also saw a couple of baby sambo's. My mates brother was in a tinnie working the sand flats near the jetty and him and his three mates got 27 good sized king george in the middle of the day.
Further up the beach the drain which enters the ocean just after the holy mile(all the religious campsites)as you go towards dunsborough, held a few Black bream on lures only 2 legal, and undersized salmon. Where the drain enters the ocean there is an area of sand flats got a few very good sized yellowfin whiting on soft plastics in the afternoon.
Bunkers was lifeless except for hordes of tiny herring and blowies.
Gnarabup(near prevally) had heaps of herring abouts, getting them on strawing rigs late afternoon, and a few good sized skippy hanging about to. Burleying helped.
Way down south my friend went and fished cosy corner and only got 2 herring and a few undersized skippy.
Hope this gives you a bit of help in deciding where to go. And if you want crabs walk along the beach just after dark with a light and scoop net, got some around toby inlet. mouth.
