Buying a boat

Hey Guys

Seriously looking at buying my own boat. But as I have never done it before, need some pointers.

How do you check to make sure nothing is owing on it? Do you need to make sure it has a HIN number etc - can you do this online?

How much is stamp duty etc on the trailer/transfer fees - is this expensive?

Obviously insurance

What else to look for if buying private? How do you know its not dodge is basically what I am checking.

Any other pointers?

Still undecided on what I want, whether centre console would be too cold/wet for Albany and should I get a runabout.

Also there is a boat with a 90hp honda, that says it has done 800 hours - that seems like a lot - but is it? Like buying a second hand car your not really sure how good the engine is?

Thanks

David

I think first of all you need

I think first of all you need to Work out what you want to use the boat for.  This will help determine the configuration and size. Once you have this you can start thinking  what options/extras you would like. Then start looking at how far your $$$ go.

have a look at a magazine by Jeff Webster called second hadn trailer boats there is lots of use full tips in that.

Boat buying

Buying a 2nd hand boat is worse than buying a second hand car! with a car your on land Its not to bad if you brake down,If your out at sea its a different kettle of fish,ha ha . Make sure its ok. I bought my first boat off of my Bro it was great! But then needed a up grade was in the same situation as you . But then i thought might as well buy brand new rather than buying someone elses trouble , saves all the worrying. Now i am the proud owner of a Hains hunter 495 Profish with a 90hp four stroke on the back with all the stuff you need on it, anchor winch, search light, interiour lights dual sounder, gps.Isaw it in the plastic before i got them to make it up just how i wanted it,and it has a warranty 5 years for engine which is a Honda Vtec and sevn years for the hull. Sweet ride goes like the wind. Which it hasnt stopped seems like for ever now. With boats more than cars you have to be very careful because things can get very nasty out there real quick and nothing is worse than being caught out at sea when things go wrong. Becareful there are sharks out there! the two legged variety.

Buying second hand

Wed, 2011-12-14 14:29

If you intend buying second hand, do some research in the boat you're going to buy, or the motor that is on the back. Most important, find out from your boating friends who they use to service their boats with. Don't do servicing or repairs on boat motors unless you are very capable. As Robert said, being out and it turns nasty, you want to feel as certain as you can, your rig is going to get you out of trouble. When you have decided on what you want, get it checked out by a marine mechanic, yes it will cost you but a lot less than if the motor or hull isn't up to the task. Good luck!!

I've got a centr econsole and unless I had Clears fitted to  it I would not want it down south where its cold. Saying that they have the most usable deck and have seen some with drop down clears that would be nice and dry
