buying a new boat
Submitted by andyh on Sun, 2011-10-23 17:05
hi guys
iv been looking into buying a boat for a while now. i want it to be about 5.5-6 metres and centre console preferrably. i do have a budget (hahahaha) of around 35-40k. iv heard a few good reports on the polycraft as a good start out boat. ill be putting a lowrance hds7 or 10 on it when i do buy the beast. what do you fellas reckon? am i going in the right direction

Mate 35-40k theres some great
Mate 35-40k theres some great boats around 6.4m for about 30k. Get a great boat for your budget. Polycraft boats ride really well- cc or cabin. are you looking for second hand or brand new?
Maybe buy a 2nd hand and then buy the GPS brand new.

my budget does get lower,
my budget does get lower, haha. id prefer 2nd hand to save a few bux but ill definitly get a nice new sounder/gps. i just want to get the best and most reliable boat i can for the money. i have a contact who sells polycraft, thats why im leaning that way and i havent heard a bad thing about them. aside the fact that they are quite basic. im not going to be doing overnighters in it or anything, its just for perth and down south

Does size matter- I know you
Does size matter- I know you said around 5.5 or 6m, but for the same price, you could get something maybe a bit bigger. Do you want something smaller for convenience- solo launching/ storage etc?
Cheers

smaller for convenience. i hav a subaru that cant tow much and i dont have much room to store it, only just got permission to store it out the front of my house. it only needs to be big enuff to go out to rotto to float around chasing sambos and demersals

Your subaru would tow about 2
Your subaru would tow about 2 tonne?
Maybe consider a centre cab- still a walk around but a bit more protection. I think theres a 5.8m Trailcraft? not sure...

at the moment my subaru cant
at the moment my subaru cant even drive with 4 people in the car as iv modified the suspension. i kept the original springs so it shouldnt be too expensiv to get them refitted. was looking on boatsales.com last nite and saw a nice 6m quintrex cc that is in my budget. the only reason id look at brand new is for reliability and the fact that it would be a blank canvass for me to customize with everything that i want but looking at my funds and savings (lack of) it wont be untill at least february when i can afford it

Not if i get it first!
I tried to ring them 4 times but they havent answered. Its built in canadia for flat water fishing (fresh water fishing) so am not sure how it'll go in our territory. But as it is, you could sell the motor for 13k, trailer for 4k and boat for whatever and you have got your money back. All 2008 model which is sweet.
I think its a ripper and i hope you get it. Definetly a bargain.

Yer im not sure how they
Yer im not sure how they ride, but if you do some research that might help. I think the seller is located in Burns Beach, but the boat might be up north somewhere.
Good luck with the loan!

That sort of money will get
That sort of money will get you a pretty good rig for sure.
The brother has an ocean whaler 565 down in Busso, he and the mates rate it very well. I`ve not been on it yet but the boys reckon its the cats whiskers. My last boat was a Bonito 180 centreconsole and that was an awsum little boat, the guy who bought it off me took it with him when he went back to NZ to live, says a bit about it I reckon.
C/C all the way.
This is a runabout but the same hull.

Better have a good chiropractor if you buy a trailcraft. But they are a good boat if you do alot of trips up north (imo) go fibreglass if your only going to use it for metro

I suspect the ocean whalers
I suspect the ocean whalers would give a better ride than most ali's, but what about compared to other fibreglass. They look like they could handle small chop ok, but in bigger chop or going over waves, wouldnt they hit a large increase in bouyancy and slam as the hull pushes into the water?

5.4m center console
Hi Andy
I see you are looking for a center console.
If you have time have a look at the Explorer 540 CC.
Its on our website http://www.waterworldwa.com.au/used-boats-perth
I can do a new one for you at under $40k
Regards Matt
