BYOB: Building your own boat- noob questions

Hello all!

I'm seriously considering doing a home build of a 18ft centre console boat.  The plan would be to assemble the boat from a flat pack kit, which is of course based on a proven design with the required engineering specifications.  This will be a one off for personal use, and more so for the satisfaction of building it myself.

As I've not attempted something this stupid(!) before, I'd like to know if there are any snags involved in applying for a HIN number, and whether there are any other regulations to comply with.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Marius

Registering it and HIN etc is pretty straight forward. and marine place can give you the HIN.  Building one is a different kettle

Paul: Thanks for the advice. Yes, building it is a different ball game. But that's where the challenge and enjoyment will lie.  See the links below please.

Dunga: Thanks for the link. That's a magnificent build!  Dan 1 may be the guy to question as well.

The project I have in mind is much less ambitious, as it is a wood/fibreglass composite. I have no welding skills to build in aluminium, but I feel that this project is within my abilities.

Here's some info about the boat- sorry for going off-topic on my own thread.... just can't help myself!

 I built my own 4.8 m ali

Tue, 2014-11-11 20:37

I built my own 4.8 m ali centre console about 15 years ago and am in the process of stripping parts from it and selling it for scrap.  At the time when I built it the I saved about 3 or 4 thousand dollars.  Would I do it again.  No. I couldn't get any hull insurance only third party.  It's got no value if I wanted to sell.  But I got 15 years of a tough boat out of it.

As for the Hin. The kit manufacturer should supply you with the number as part of the kit.

Thanks for the reply Billy69.

Were there any other certification issues involved?  Ispections or surveying required?

Thanks in advance

No problem to register it, just filled in the paperwork and lodged it. No survey or inspection as it was for private use.

If you do go down the home building road you will find that the last 5 % of the build will take 95% of the time.

My old man built an aluminum boat 27 years ago. Still going strong though for insurance, after 20 years, it needs to be inspected by a surveyor every year I believe.

it is a 18.5m racing yacht though, so insurance would differ I should imagine.

6 years past no prob with insurance or registration, not hard. but having a mate in the business to give tip was a big advantage ! mine has sealed floor & one bulk head = 2 bunged air tight sections of hull.. things have changed for boat builders having to use foam for positive floatation since i built mine ,worth planning it with the build for ease of installing if .

Pelagicyachts, there are some sweet boats in there- have bookmarked them to my favourites folder to investigate later.

Peel 166, the eggshell crate construction of the "Marissa" hull below the deck, would make it easy to fill the chambers with expending PU foam.  Thanks for the tip!

yeah the Envi boats are pretty cool - be a lot of work and $ in building something like that though - they have a really good builders forum too -which if nothing else will give you some insight into how some of these have been put together - which ever one you build- your going to become good friends with Epoxy ! :-)

Bowditch is another of the ones around that seems to have a good following. Mate of mine in Gove built one and seems to be happy with it.
