Be keen to know. As I know what I was catching in the same depth out off Hillarys today, but my fcv620 wasn't showing like that...
Do you normally have the gain at 7 when in 30m?

I don't any spots outside of the 3 Mile so thought I'd go out and have a crack at finding something a bit further out and wanted to use high gain to find and mark anything of note and then lower gain to loop back around.

Salmon
Considering the water depth and the density of the echo I'd go with it being a school of salmon

Gain should be closer to 4
Gain should be closer to 4 in that depth, you'll get better separation

Yeah gain way too high for that depth, you can tell with all the surface clutter it's picking up.

Sorry Kirky but you answered
Sorry Kirky but you answered a question with a question so Megladon takes out the paper clip. Big school of salmon.
I found the tiniest of lumps and after the first drift and a couple of bites I headed back for another drift and just about blew my load thinking I had hit the pinkie motherload as we had a show (almost) like that the weekend before the ban in my mate's boat.
Great fun before work in any case.
I wanna know what ssteve got into at the 30m mark as I was struggling to find anything but sand or tiny, tiny lumps.

Haha not quite
Tried to put Salmon only in the subject field but it wouldn't let me without putting something in the comment spot.
Oh well will have to live without that much needed paper clip![](http://fishwrecked.com/sites/all/libraries/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/wink_smile.gif)

Salmon for me also. I literally couldn't get a plastic or jig past them... Was alot of fun!
From what I have sounded around in that depth there is alot of nothing, but if you were finding really small lumps i'd be taking another look at them. I was trying to fish a small lump where we have caught a Baldie and KG on. Mind you that was a bit of a one off.

Yeah good idea. I was getting some bites on the lump and it could well have been KGs down there and in hindsight I should have put on a smaller hook. Reckon next time though if I head out 6 miles I may as well head out another 6 to the 40's.

What size hook
Jack.... I use a 4/0 bait keeper on Paternost. We get KGW Skippy Pinkies etc on that size regularly. .. solid KGW.45cm plus though. Thought it maybe useful info for you. Pez

When getting wharassed
Keep one of them... cut it in half down thru the shoulder and then pin both pieces on 9 or 10/0 s on a paternost with your heaviest set up. In the past we've caught Big Dhuies this way. They can resist a sizabke feed. Key point here is you need to have a big compliant Dhuie floating around on the chew.
