Cannonball bernier

Not goin to be much of a story, as can't back it up with too many photos...

got back Sunday night from a 3 day trip to the islands with a couple of mates. Scored big time with the weather, and with the fish, although if you think the sharks are bad in exxy, you ain't seen shit....

It was near impossible to land snapper at most spots, and even moving a km or two away, the pricks of things would be there waiting for you, and in big numbers. It was seriously not worth fishing any depth between 15-80m, they were EVERYWHERE. I honestly can't beleive the numbers of these things.

Anyway, resorted to the trusty rob Allen to put runs on the board, and runs we made. Water crystal clear in most spots, mantas frolicking, big fish abundant, trigger finger got a workout. Had some frikkin awesome photos of awesome fish too, until my underwater Nikon camera shit itself in 12m water, burst a seal, camera dead, Scotto pissed.

Got our 2 days bag limit over the 3 days. Here's one of the only photos my mate got. Shit shadows, but good tusky and baldy.

Solid couple of reef munchers there.
Shame ya camera crapped out Scotto, no doubt there would have been some good fish come from the straight hook.

Was it a camera in a housing

Tue, 2014-07-08 20:46

Was it a camera in a housing or a waterproof camera and if it was a housing failure what breed was it?

Good report...

Tue, 2014-07-08 20:49

...that would be a good pic for fishwreckapedia, featuring WA's two most prominent members of the bluebone clan!

Anyway, this shark thing is getting ridiculous, all up and down the coast...I reckon it's only a matter of time before the powers-that-be step in and start restricting rec fishing activity in an attempt to reduce the carnage...certainly that will happen before a widespread shark cull.

too right Lamby,

the beard assists with the cammo, and hides my evil grin when I deal with a shark. also enhances manliness and cool-as-fuckliness in general. in some countries they have a name for men without a beard, they call them women.

crano, it was a Nikon Coolpix, underwater camera with no housing. wasn't super expensive, but not exactly cheap either when I bought it, aprox $450ish. time for a gopro me thinks.

agreed auslobster. I am now convinced that for there to be any impact on the shark population, it is going to take decades of work/shark fishing/etc, as the numbers are literally out of control. I struggle to wrap my head around the figures of how much fish these things are eating, especially when their numbers are in the millions.

In Close

Wed, 2014-07-09 07:07

The sharks don't seem to bother you in close to the shore but get over 10 or more metres and you would think twice. The inside of the islands isn't nearly as bad as the outside.

Agreed - I've only fished

Wed, 2014-07-09 17:26

Agreed - I've only fished those islands once, and the sharks were pretty plentiful.

However having said that, didnt have too much trouble losing fish to them. More a problem of just hooking the things themselves, then losing jig after jig to the bastards as a result!

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
