Cape Nat Tuna Advice
Submitted by MT on Mon, 2014-12-22 14:44
I'll be fishing out from the cape for a few weeks after Christmas and looking to find Tuna (Yellowfin specifically). Does anyone have any advice on where you're more likely to find them and the best methods for targetting them? (Beyond the obvious look for bait schools and birds etc, etc..)
I've trolled up stripey's and SBT's around Rocky point before but for now i'm really mainly interested in targetting yellowfin.
Any helpful hints much appreciated.
Cheers!

Coral Lumps
Used to see schools of tuna working around the Coral Lumps area more than inside the bay. Good chance of yellowtail kingfish there as well

Temp change
Look for a temp change on sst chart and on the water. Currently some colder 18-19 deg water west of the cape http://oceancurrent.imos.org.au/CLeeu/latest.html that may be holding bait and the fins could be in the warmer 20deg water. Find the bait, find the current line and the fish may not be far. Find the birds even better, they tell you whats goin on. Im new to tuna fishin but these things worked for us on the fins again today!
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

Thanks all, I suspect its going to take a bit of luck although heading out towards the shelf into the warmer current seems to be a better bet than nearer to shore. That may or may not be an option depending on a few things but either way I'll give it a crack and see what can be found!

Heaps of BFT around but the YFT are few and far between, but they are there. This one was caught in the bay a couple of years ago.

Now that's a Tuna!
Massive fish for WA waters and to be caught in the bay just makes it even more notable.....trolled or livebaited?
