Car Aircon Service or Regas
Submitted by Happy Hooker on Thu, 2015-02-19 12:03
Anyone had aircon in their vehicles serviced or re-gassed and is it worth effort/cost ? If so any recommendations NOR ( around Osb Park/Balcatta or thereabouts)
Have 100 series Landcruiser TD 2004 and not sure if it needs service etc.
Only ask as don't drive it much and jumped in after driving my other car ( new commodore) into the cruiser and felt that wasn't as cold . All works OK and new belts etc put on a week or so ago .
Cheers

I don't think I've ever been in one car then the next and the aircon being the same. I've got a Subaru Outback and I've never come across an aircond as good as that's got. My Ute isn't bad but struggles a little when the temperature gets up over 45, but I believe that the airconds are not all that good in the FG Fords.

check the sight
not a 100% sure where it is in a 100 series but usually in front of the radiator you'll find the a/c condenser. Very near it is a receiver with a sight glass on top of it. Crack the a/c to coldest and check the glass if it's clear gas is ok, if you see bubbles / flashing low on gas. Bear in mind it's illegal to top it up, any reputable company will find the leak first. Generally it's front seal on compressor or occasionally a flare nut. Oil is a give away.

DYE
I have only done a tiny bit on car systems, but i look after a lot of HVAC units out on the rig and have made the point of UV dye in them all out here. From what i remember, a lot of cars have a dye injection in them. A few beers in the arvo, wiat for it to get dark then shine a UV light around for any tell tales...
Depending what gas it is will also determine how much its going to cost i'd imagine.

The compressor cycling
The compressor cycling in/out is an ok indication of whether the system is getting cold enough. On low fan speed it should cut in/out every 20-60 seconds in cool-warm temps and possibly longer on scorching days. Make sure engine fan/condenser fan is running and blowing enough air when switched on.
